I’ll admit I really wasn’t very familiar with San Luis Obispo CA’s SLO Brew, and even though they’ve been around since 1988, I was never able to get my hands on any of their other beers. Well all of that is about to change, and in more ways than one.
Today I’ll be sampling SLO Brew because they were kind enough to send it, but this is all done in support of SLO Brew’s recent announcement that for the first time, beer-lovers outside of California will now be able to get their beers.
Back in 2017, SLO Brew launched their Cali-Squeeze in blood orange flavor, and the beer has been very popular ever since. If you’re not familiar, Cali-Squeeze uses a Hefeweizen base with real fruit purees to create the various flavors and today I’ll be sampling three variants….so off we go.
SLO Brew Blood Orange Cali-Squeeze
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 15
Style: Fruit Hefeweizen
Packaging: 16oz cans
Appearance: Bright crimson red
Aroma: Tropical fruit & bright citrus
Mouthfeel: Light bodied & crushable
Taste: Sweet and tart orange flavors with ruby red grapefruit
Overall: Blood Orange Cali-Squeeze is a really drinkable and crushable mix of a semi-traditional Hefeweizen with a nice punch of blood orange. The balance of sweet and tart plays nicely on your tongue and overall the beer is bright and satisfyingly.
SLO Brew Mango Cali-Squeeze
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 15
Style: Fruit Hefeweizen
Packaging: 16oz cans
Appearance: Bright Golden
Aroma: Mango & tropical fruits
Mouthfeel: Light bodied & crushable
Taste: Juicy mango and mild orange peel
Overall: Mango Cali-Squeeze begins as a refreshing fruit-filled Hefe and finishes as a really satisfyingly and refreshing fruit-forward Hefe. I really like the juicy and sticky mango presence in this variant and the overall balance leans nicely into Mango as well as ripe peaches. This may be my favorite of the three.
SLO Brew Tropical P.O.G. Cali-Squeeze
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 15
Style: Fruit Hefeweizen
Packaging: 16oz cans
Appearance: Deep Orange Golden
Aroma: Oranges & Guava
Taste: Sweet orange, sticky guava and crush tropical fruits.
Overall: This variant really lives up to it’s P.O.G. (passionfruit, oranges, Guava) name. The mix of tropical fruits is really crisp and drinkable and the overall blend of fruit flavors works really well. This variant feels like the easiest-drinking flavor and overall I think this beer will find it’s way into your cooler over and over again.
SLO Brew Cali-Squeeze flavors are available now in 12oz and 16oz cans and trust me when I say, you definitely want to try these beers. I’ll be taking these to the beach in a few weeks and you should get out there and try them for yourself. And when you do try them, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
