Governor Signs Bill To Make Brewer’s Yeast The Official Microbe of Oregon

The Beard wishes to extend its congratulations to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, better known as Brewer’s Yeast, upon being named the official State Microbe of Oregon.

A resolution honoring the many contributions of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to the culture and economy of Oregon was signed yesterday by Governor John Kitzhaber.

In front, Governor Kitzhaber. Behind him, left to right, are Rep. Mark Johnson (the sponsor), Joel Shields (Rogue Ales), Kurt Widmer, Matt Swihart (Double Mountain Brewery), State Senator Floyd Prozanski, Ian Croxall (Santiam Brewing), Rob Widmer, and Thomas Gall a Gresham, Oregon firefighter who first proposed the legislation.

Rogue Ales brewer Joel Shields presents Governor Kitzhaber with a bottle of Beard Beer.

The Beard lent its full support to the resolution and testified on its behalf before a legislative committee in April.
