Atomic Mom: She’s Out of this World
The year is 1953. Decades before the Springfield Underground was North America’s preeminent cheese storage facility, it was the top secret site of a federal atomic experimentation lab. Locals were kept in the dark of this fact, though it was widely noted that the ground temperature over the site was ‘a fair shade warmer’ than the rest of the ground. Scientists, led by Dr. Sandy Brewer, were on a mission to harness the awesome power of the atom for the benefit of humankind. At the heart of Ozarks Elemental Site #42 (as it was known to the President and his closest advisors) was a centrifuge, designed to enrich common elements into fissile isotopes.
One fateful day, Dr. Brewer, an avid gardener, brought a cutting of humulus lupulus to the lab, which she had brought from the Yakima Valley, to add to her selection of exotic plants. She intended to expose the plant to a mild dose of gamma radiation in hopes of boosting the vine’s growth. While deep in the throes of her work, a lab custodian tripped over his mop and stumbled into the main control panel, trapping Dr. Brewer in the gamma chamber. Geiger counters went off the charts and the alarms began sounding. The research team rushed into the control room and in their haste ignored the ‘Wet Floor’ signs, slipping on the freshly mopped floor, and landing in a confused pile. By the time the override switch was flipped, it was too late: Dr. Brewer had been exposed to an amount of radiation later calculated to be equivalent to that generated by one million suns over the course of one million years. The team despaired. When core temperatures had been stabilized, they opened the gamma chamber, fearing what they would find …
