Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights 10 Barrel Brewing All Ways Down (Review)

If you’ve been following along on mybeerbuzz.com, you’ll know I’m a big fan of the new beers coming from 10 Barrel Brewing in Bend, OR. If you check out my recent reviews (here and here), you’ll get an idea of some of the hoppy beers coming from 10 Barrel Brewing and how much I really enjoyed them.

Today we’ll be sampling their new All Ways Down and before I even open the can, I should point out a) just how cool the packaging is with the great outdoor theme (boards, bikes…, and b) how much I really love 19.2oz and 12oz cans. To me the 19.2oz and 12oz cans are the perfect package for outdoor (or indoor) enjoyment of a beer, and with this beer being a double IPA, it’s even better.

As 10 Barrel puts it, “

This beer was originally created with the Rome Snowboards crew in mind, and contributing ideas to our head brewer in Denver, Kay Witkiewicz,” said Grady Skelton, 10 Barrel Brewing’s Sr. Creative Brand Manager. “Originally, it was for an annual party at our Denver Pub during the Winter Outdoor Retailer show. We adopted Rome Snowboards’ tagline as the name of the beer and to pay homage to the feeling of sliding down hills sideways. We kept drinking it after doing fun stuff, mostly downhill, so we expanded the idea to all the other gravity sports we enjoy. After three years of brewing this beer with Rome, we tweaked the recipe and got it ready to make a big splash in a package on the shelf of your local bottle shop or on draft at your local pub.”

For those who already know, Rome is based in New England; Vermont specifically, which as we all know is a mecca for good beer, and especially Double IPAs. Witkiewicz felt the pressure and poured massive effort and hops into this beer, including Simcoe, Azacca and Mosaic Cryo Hops; employing the trifecta to bring a  full-on assault of hop flavor and aroma to the drinker's palate.

This effort was awarded at the 2021 Oregon Beer Awards with a gold medal in the Imperial IPA category. It probably helped that Witkiewicz first had to win over the Vermonters who agreed to share their name with his beer. He did though, and there’s even a tiny Rome Snowboard on the can to prove it.”

Of course I’m anxious to find my way down to the bottom of the can, so off we go…

10 Barrel brewing All Ways Down

ABV:  9%
IBU:  75
Style:  Double IPA
Packaging: 19.2oz Cans
Appearance:  Bright amber orange
Aroma:   Citrus and loads of hops, hops and more hops
Mouthfeel:   Medium to robust
Taste:   Grapefruit, citrus and a touch of resinous hops late in the sip
Overall: All Ways Down is a really enjoyable and drinkable double IPA. The beer is loaded with hop flavors and aromas from the Simcoe, Azacca and Mosaic cryo hops and the bright citrus flavors make it a really flavorful beer. There is a touch of boozy built in (which I liked), and overall I think this is a really good beer and yet another example of how good the award winning the hoppy beers are coming out of 10 Barrel.

Get out there and try 10 Barrel All Ways Down for yourself. And when you do try it, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
