Over the course of the last few years, I’ve been sampling (and enjoying) a lot of cider. Just recently, I also started sampling hard seltzers as well, so I’m really excited to be sampling a new cider that combines the best of both of these two worlds.
This new beverage is called Cider Spritz and it comes to us from Mass Bay Brewing Company in Boston, MA. (aka Harpoon). This new brand of cider was launched at the end of the summer and this new cider will go year-round. Cider Spritz if made from 100% fresh-pressed apple juice from New England orchards and it is fermented with a wine yeast. This new offering will join City Roots Original Dry Cider as their 2nd year-round cider. I’m looking forward to trying this one, so off we go…
Cider Spritz pours an even golden color with lots of tart apple, pineapple and orange in the aromas. The mouthfeel is more carbonated than a traditional cider and a bit lighter as well. The flavors lead with apple, citrus and pineapple with a soft dry finish and a lingering tart apple flavor. The mouthfeel makes this feel much more like a hard seltzer, with the aroma, color and look of a cider. This cider has no added sweeteners or sulfites and I think you’ll be surprised to find that it has only 1 gram of sugar and 97-calories per 12oz serving. This beverage is also gluten-free so I think the combination of low-cal, gluten-free, low sugar and really appealing taste and mouthfeel will make Cider Spritz a popular drink when it is released in Dec 2019.
Overall I think City Roots has created a unique combination of cider and hard seltzer that I know you will really like. The aromas, flavors, mouthfeel and drinkability really make for a nice combination and with 1 gram of sugar, it’s also a guilt-free cider. Cider Spritz is available beginning in Dec so get out there and try it for yourself…and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
