What could be better than an ice cold beer and a jaw-droppingly good comic book?

One thing that legendary cult microbrewery 3 Floyds is consistently is “not normal,” and in celebration of this originality, pub-crawling creators Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Dark Knight III: The Master Race) and Simon Bisley (Hellblazer, Lobo) have teamed up with 3 Floyds founder and brewmaster Nick Floyd to delve into the twisted mythos behind the brand in the new comic book series, ALPHA KING.

About 3 FLOYDS: ALPHA KING #1 (Release date: May 4):

ALPHA KING is set a long time ago in a metropolis far, far away (Hammond, Indiana), where Brewer and CiCi are producing a home-brew so distinct that it attracts the attention of a monstrous king and his horrid minions from another dimension. Swords are unsheathed, lines are crossed and sieges are laid for the rise of the Alpha King.

As any Beer Geek can tell you, 3 Floyds brews some of the best and instantaneously memorable beers going today. Azzarello and Bisley bring their vision to the strange and wild characters created by 3 Floyds... guaranteed to be a blood-and-beer-soaked hardcore epic.

Over the last few years beer and comic books have become a winning combination.

One thing that legendary cult microbrewery 3 Floyds is consistently is “not normal,” and in celebration of this originality, pub-crawling creators, acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Dark Knight III: The Master Race, Before Watchmen: Rorschach, Wonder Woman, Joker) and artist Simon Bisley (Hellblazer, Lobo) have teamed up with 3 Floyds founder and brewmaster Nick Floyd along with colorist Ryan Brown and letterer Jared K. Fletcher to delve into the twisted mythos behind the brand in ALPHA KING.

“This book is what happens when beer and comics conceive on a barstool,” said Azzarello. “I’m a proud poppa.”

ALPHA KING is set a long time ago in a town far, far away (Hammond, Indiana), where Brewer and CiCi are producing a home-brew so distinct that it attracts the attention of a monstrous king and his horrid minions from another dimension. Swords are unsheathed, lines are crossed and sieges are laid for the rise of the Alpha King.

Featuring the insanity created by 3 Floyds—from their bottle washers to head brewers—this all-new series is a heavy metal mad mash-up through a futuristic medieval apocalypse. Zombies? Check. Barbarian hordes? Check. An Arctic Panzer Wolf? Sure, why not?

As any beer geek can tell you, 3 Floyds brews some of the best and instantaneously memorable beers available. Azzarello and Bisley bring their vision to the strange and wild characters created by 3 Floyds… guaranteed to be a hardcore epic that is “not normal” from the first page to the blood-and-beer-soaked conclusion.

OTHER COMIC AND BEER PAIRINGS OF NOTE:

Last year, when Hellboy turned 21, he got his own beer, The Right Hand of Doom—a limited-edition red ale that was created by Oregon-based microbrewery Rogue Ales. Arcade Brewery has also made a beer for Mike Norton’s popular web comic Battlepug. Chicago’s Half Acre Beer Co. made Beer Hates Astronauts IPA in honor of writer and artist Ryan Browne’s sci-fi superhero comic God Hates Astronauts.

Breckenridge Brewery made Hulk’s Mash,—a pale ale, for the Denver Comic Con, while the Brooklyn Brewery created Brooklyn Defender for New York Comic Con and Revolution Brewing has been making IPA Galaxy Hero since 2013 for C2E2.

And while not comic book inspired, but probably one of the most well-known in the beer and pop culture realm, Cooperstown, NY brewery Ommergang has produced Game of Thrones inspired beers like Iron Throne Blonde Ale, Take the Black Stout, and Three-Eyed Raven.

Such beers aren’t limited to fictional characters. In 2014, Shmaltz Brewing Co. released King Kirby Genesis Ale—named for legendary creator Jack Kirby as part of a benefit for the Hero Initiative.
