Fiction Beer Company and the local donut gurus at Glazed and Confuzed are back at it to create a delicious holiday treat with their DONUT PANIC beer release. A Confuzed Samoa Donut Ale inspired by Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The brewers at Fiction Beer Company, with the chef at Glazed and Confuzed. wanted to ensure this year’s offering would top the original! In creating the 2nd annual collaboration the goal was to make sure the beer took on the flavors of the #1 selling donut yet still have a flavor and texture profile that beer geeks and beer novices can appreciate.
The collaboration started with hybrid style base beer, a pale stout. Rich biscuit malt, sweet caramel malt, a high mash temp for a full bodied mouth feel, and the addition of creamy lactose provide the background context for this story. The protagonists; over 50 lbs of coconut, 10 lbs of raw cocoa, and several dozen Confuzed Samoa Donuts. The majority of the coconut was added at the end of the boil to allow the flavor to meld with base beer and ferment alongside of the malt sugars. Another 30 lbs of toasted coconut were added along with all of the cocoa, and the Confuzed Samoa Donuts post fermentation. The late additions contribute all of the aroma of this beer and give the drinker the immediate sense of drinking our favorite donut. The first sip brings a layer of coconut flavor unlike any other. This is followed immediately by a touch of caramel malt and chocolate sweetness leaving the drinker with the taste of a donut in a glass. Not sweet, but not dry this balanced beer promises to set a new standard for the use of specialty ingredients and will solidify this new holiday tradition.
Fiction Beer Company will host Glazed and Confuzed for a special release party on Saturday, December 19th. The release event will include donut and beer pairings, special discounts on beer and brunch options available from both Glazed and Confuzed, as well as from the regular food truck at Fiction. DONUT PANIC will be available on tap and in 22oz bombers Doors will open at noon.
