Duvel & Ommegang Celebrate Belgian Independence Day With Philly Events

In honor of Belgian Independence Day on Tuesday, July 21 (the official holiday), legendary Belgian brewery and importer Duvel Moortgat will host a series of fun events, starting on Saturday, July 18 and ending on Tuesday, July 21. Belgian Independence Day was originally celebrated on July 21, 1831 as a way to joyously mark the uprising that separated Belgium from the Netherlands. The people of Belgium toasted their independence by drinking the country’s best beer, and today we continue that tradition with a week of festivities to commemorate the landmark event.

  • On Sunday, July 19, Duvel Moortgat will host their Belgian Independence Day Party at the PHS Pop-Up Beer Garden (1438 South Street)
    • From 12 noon until 10 p.m. guests will enjoy a selection of perfectly Belgian and special Belgian-style beers from Duvel and Ommegang on draught, including:  Hennepin, Rare Vos, Gnomegang, La Chouffe, Houblon Chouffe, Liefmans Fruitesse, Fleur de Houblon, Liefmans Goudenband and Duvel Single
    • Ommegang has brewed a limited release beer for the occasion, available on draught at the PHS Pop-Up Beer Garden: Ommegang Belgian Independence Day, a Belgian-style tripel, dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops
    • Blackbird Society Orchestra, a 6-piece live jazz band, will be performing 1920s “Hot Jazz” music from12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.; the Bearded Ladies Cabaret Co. will perform at
      6 p.m.; and the breweries will provide Lawn Games, such as Giant Jenga and Corn Hole
    • Guests can expect fun giveaways and prizes, including Duvel and Ommegang swag

  • Duvel will host a Beer and Cheese Tour with partners Di Bruno Bros., featuring gourmet cheeses paired with special Belgian beers, at several Foodery locations across Philadelphia
    • Beer and Cheese Tours will include three cheese pairings from Di Bruno Bros., complementingDuvel Golden Ale, Ommegang Belgian Independence Day and Duvel Tripel Hop, a seasonal brewed with three different hop varieties, the third one – Equinox for 2015 – changes each year to keep the flavor profile new and exciting
    • Tours will be held at Foodery locations throughout the city:
      • Saturday, July 18 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Center City Foodery (324 South 10th Street)
      • Sunday, July 19 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Northern Liberties Foodery (837 North 2ndStreet)
      • Monday, July 20 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Roxborough Foodery (6148 Ridge Avenue)
      • Tuesday, July 21 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Rittenhouse Foodery (1710 Sansom Street)

o Foodery stores will also be highlighting Duvel beer and merchandise, including their 2+1 Gift Packs, featuring two specialty beers and custom-designed glassware
