From Hair Of The Dog:
PORTLAND – It started as an 80th birthday party for Fred Eckhardt, the Dean of American Beer Writers, and now it’s in its 10th year. That, of course, means Fred is turning 89. And we are celebrating again on May 3, 1-5 p.m. at Hair of the Dog Brewing, 61 SE Yamhill, in Portland.
When we first started FredFest, Fred asked that no gifts be given and that all the proceeds toward a charitable organization. This year's charity is the Oregon Zoo Foundation. We are building a fund in remembrance of Michael Olsen, a Hair of the Dog employee who was shot and killed on the streets of Portland last year.
“Our goal is to provide scholarships for kids to go to summer camps at the Zoo, hoping to instill a love of animals and nature in them, just like Mikey had,” said festival co-founder and Hair of the Dog owner/brewmaster Alan Sprints.
One-hundred percent of FredFest ticket sales go to our charity and Hair of the Dog covers all expenses for the event, so attendees are encouraged to pay more than the suggested ticket price.
Tickets are $65, available for advance purchase only on Hair of the Dog’s website. Ticket includes a commemorative glass, beer- food buffet, and a special selection of beers, plus birthday cake and a chance to sing Happy Birthday to Fred.
Designated Driver tickets, also available as advance purchase, are $30, includes food and soft drinks, birthday and a round of Happy Birthday.
Some of this year's beers include:
• Crooked Stave - Port Barrel Aged Nightmare on Brett
• Firestone Walker - Stickee Monkee
• Chuckanut - Kolsch & Dunkel
• Three Floyds - Big Tiddy Assassin
• The Bruery - Ould Tart w/ Cherries & Freckle
• Alesmith - Old Ale & Speedway Stout
• Grassroots Brewing - Convival Saurez
• Hill Farmstead - Anna & Aurther
The beer list is being updated constantly, so keep an eye on it at the website. Volunteers are still needed. More details are available atFredFestPDX.com and hairofthedog.com.
