Kona Castaway IPA - A First Tasting

Before I go any further, I have to put it out there that this is perhaps the best media sampling kit I’ve ever received.  Kona Castaway IPA arrived in the one and only “Wilson” from the movie Cast Away.  However, this volleyball not only had the original Wilson and Cast Away (the film) logo, but also Kona branding and logos…and if that wasn’t enough, the ball was filled with crinkle cut paper, and the best part of all….two bottles of Kona Castaway IPA.  As you can see in the photo, this was a unique and really cool media kit.

To top that, Kona even sent an instruction sheet showing how to reuse & recycle this packing material.  Now I already know how to recycle the beer, but Kona even included instructions on how to recycle everything from the box to the packaging and even five ideas how to reuse the volleyball itself (although I admit the volleyball is going on my beer shelf!)

I brought you news that Castaway was coming to the mainland, and I even brought you the first peek at this beer…..So how is the beer?  It’s actually very good, and perhaps my all-time favorite Kona beer.  Castaway uses Millenium, Galaxy, Citra and Simcoe hops (some of my favorites) so the nose is loaded with grapefruit and mango…and the taste keeps going down that tasty path.  The beer is brite and refreshing and it has flavors of grapefruit, pineapple and citrus.  Castaway finishes clean and refreshing and the malt balance works very nicely for me.  At 6% ABV and 50 IBU it’s very drinkable and really enjoyable.

Check out Kona Castaway IPA for yourself and see what you think.  It’s available on draft and in bottles and based on my first sampling, I think I may have found my new beach beer!  Mahalo!
