Every year, hundreds of women in Weyerbacher’s home, Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, are diagnosed with breast cancer. For many of these women, this means countless doctor visits, months of treatments and more. All too often this means lost wages and insurmountable bills during what is possibly the most trying time in that woman’s life.
Weyerbacher, in connection with The Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund of Lehigh Valley Health Network, is brewing up some help. Althea, which in Greek means “healing”, is a beer for giving back. For every bottle of Althea sold Weyerbacher will donate $1 to The Breast Cancer Assistance Fund to help these women—our mothers, daughters, wives, sisters and their families—cover costs like travel, child care, prosthesis and more.

Althea, based on a recipe developed by our New Jersey sales representative Natalie DeChico, will be a Belgian-style Dubbel with Italian plums added which should finish around 8.5% ABV. Althea will be packaged in 750ml cork and cage bottles and will hit the shelves in October 2013 to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a limited run with an extremely important purpose and will move quickly. With a recipe developed by a woman for women, this is a unique and delicious way for beer lovers to support women in their fight against breast cancer.

Based in Easton, PA, Weyerbacher Brewing Company is dedicated to making bold, innovative beers which challenge style boundaries. With all of our recent growth, we started looking for ways to help the community around us. Weyerbacher already donates a portion of proceeds from another beer called Last Chance IPA to Animal Rescue organizations each month. We continue that tradition with Althea and look forward to providing a great beer which people can enjoy while feeling great about helping this noble cause!
Be sure to pick up a bottle of Althea and help the women in need around you!
