Shanghai, China (November 5, 2012/mbb/) – The leading innovator of craft brewing in China, Shanghai's Boxing Cat Brewery has teamed with the World Famous Mikkeller beer brand in Denmark to produce an extremely unique beer; Bruce ChiLee IPA. Boxing Cat Brewery announced today that this beer would be available at Boxing Cat Brewery during the month of November at both their Shanghai establishments.
Brewmaster Michael Jordan stated; “Having the opportunity to collaborate with Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller was an awesome experience. Mikkel is recognized for his experimental approach to making beer and brings a lot of passion to his brands”. The beer recipe was discussed over email before Mikkel arrived to brew the beer in September. The idea was to create an exciting beer that would use native Chinese ingredients. Both breweries are widely recognized for their creativity and innovative products and Bruce ChiLee IPA definitely falls under both these categories.
Mikkel and Michael met in Denmark while Michael was the Brewmaster for Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang. Michael has been extremely experimental after leaving Denmark and assisted Mikkel in getting the Mikkeller brand into the Chinese market. Having Mikkel visit Shanghai for the first time to represent his brand and brew a collaborative beer made natural sense.
The collaboration brew incorporates brewing methods of both Mikkeller and Boxing Cat Brewery. The unique recipe infuses Chinese green chilies (辣椒/là jiāo), rye malt and Simcoe hops from the US. The resulting flavor is a pronounced chili aroma balanced with some tangerine floral hop notes. The tasting profile has green chili notes along with a subtle spice note and full flavored hop character.
During Mikkel’s Shanghai visit it was discussed that Boxing Cat Brewery will also travel to Denmark to represent China at the 2013 Copenhagen Beer Celebration next May. This is an honor for Boxing Cat Brewery as they are the only brewery from Asia participating in this “invitation only” beer festival. In the meantime 2 kegs of Bruce ChiLee IPA will be shipped to Denmark so Mikkeller can pour the collaboration beer at his bar in the Vesterbro neighborhood of Copenhagen.
