Breckenridge Brewery Announces Plans For New $20 Million Brewery

Exciting news coming out of Littleton, CO from Breckenridge Brewery:

For the third straight year, Breckenridge Brewery of Colorado posted better than 20% growth with 2012 results reaching 30%. This success brings with it some challenges for the regional brewery as it is quickly reaching capacity at its Denver production brewery.

Today the brewery announced that 12 beautiful acres along the South Platte River in Littleton, just south of Denver, will be its new home. The property stretches between South Santa Fe Drive and the Mary Carter Greenway Trail (also known as the Platte River Trail), a trail system enjoyed by bikers, walkers, and explorers of all ages.

Plans for the new, world-class brewery include several rustic buildings arranged across the landscape, much like might seen on a successful farm. The plans also include a hops field as foreground adjacent to South Santa Fe Drive. The farmhouse building will offer the freshest beer and food in a comfortable environment with indoor/outdoor seating, brewery tours, a general store and growler-to-go station, and a sunny beer garden.

“Our brewery was born and raised in Colorado,” shares Todd Usry, brewmaster and director of brewing. “We have our Colorado mountain home [in Breckenridge], and soon, a Colorado country spread along the river. Our Denver brewing operations opened in 1992, so it's tough to leave Denver, but we'll still have our two thriving restaurants there.”

Breckenridge Brewery is the 41st largest craft brewery in the United States. Its relocation to Littleton will expand the beer tourism movement that is steadily growing in Denver and Boulder. "Colorado's Front Range craft beer community continues to attract attention on local, national and international levels," says Steve Kurowski, marketing director for the Colorado Brewers Guild. "Craft beer in Colorado is beyond trendy; it's a legitimate economic engine that keeps growing and creating jobs. Most importantly, it is respectful to its neighbors."

The new facility will bring 60 jobs to Littleton, quickly growing to approximately 75 by the end of the first year of production. Breckenridge Brewery plans to break ground in the fall of 2013, brewing its first batch and opening to patrons in the fall of 2014.

Surly - Overrated West Coast Style IPA Cans Coming Early April

Leave it to Surly to cut to the chase and name their beer with a decidedly non-west-coast-flattering name.  Today we get a look at the 16oz can for Surly Over Rated! West Coast Style IPA.  Since I can’t say it better….this form the label…”What’s with the hype?  It’s been said; It’s easy to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer.  And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale.  ‘Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, thy just brew gimmick beers,’ and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer.  If you like it, great, so do we.  If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf.  Let one of the fanboys grab it.”

The original label is below.  This label was rejected by the TTB for featuring elements (the unicorn & rainbow) that may be appealing to children.

3 Floyds - Tiberian Inquisitor & Permanent Funeral (Pig Destroyer) Pale Ales

You cannot make up a more death defying set of beer names than these.  Today we get a look at the 22oz bottle labels for 3 Floyds Tiberian Inquisitor 2013 & Permanent Funeral.  Tiberian Inquisitor MMXIII (2103) is a Belgian Style pale ale aged for 1-year in French oak.  Permanent Funeral is co brewed with the band Pig Destroyer and it is also a Pale Ale.  No word on ABV or release dates for either beer so stay tuned.

Dogfish Head Firefly Ale Returns For 2013 & Goes on Tour

We're brewing more Firefly Ale this year, and it's going on a little tour of its own.

Yes, an extensive lineup of off-centered ales will be on draft all three days, and yes, our sessionable Firefly Ale will make a return.

In fact, we're brewing a bunch more this year and taking Firefly Ale on a little tour of its own leading up to the festival. Starting with a Feelies show on March 27 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., Firefly Ale will be showing up on draft at music-centric East Coast bars from Connecticut to North Carolina.

Department of Justice Files Anti-Trust Lawsuit in Anheuser-Busch / Modelo Purchase & ABInBev Response

WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice filed a civil antitrust lawsuit today challenging Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (ABI) proposed acquisition of total ownership and control of Grupo Modelo. The department said that the $20.1 billion transaction would substantially lessen competition in the market for beer in the United States as a whole and in 26 metropolitan areas across the United States, resulting in consumers paying more for beer and having fewer new products from which to choose.Americans spent at least $80 billion on beer last year.

According to the department, ABI’s Bud Light is the best selling beer in the United States and Modelo’s Corona Extra is the best-selling import. Because of the size of the beer market in the United States, even a small increase in the price of beer could result in billions of dollars of harm to American consumers, the department said.

The department’s lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks to prevent the companies from merging and to preserve the existing head-to-head competition between the firms that the transaction would eliminate.

“The department is taking this action to stop a merger between major beer brewers because it would result in less competition and higher beer prices for American consumers,” said Bill Baer, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. “If ABI fully owned and controlled Modelo, ABI would be able to increase beer prices to American consumers. This lawsuit seeks to prevent ABI from eliminating Modelo as an important competitive force in the beer industry.”

ABI and Modelo–the largest and third largest beer firms, respectively–together control about 46 percent of annual sales in the United States. MillerCoors, the second largest beer firm, accounts for about 29 percent of nationwide sales. Beer is generally grouped into four distinct segments by industry participants–sub-premium, premium, premium plus and high-end. The sub-premium segment includes: Busch (owned by ABI); and Keystone (owned by MillerCoors). The premium segment includes: Bud Light; Coors Light; and MillerLite. The premium plus segment includes: Michelob (owned by ABI); and Modelo Especial (owned by Modelo). The high-end segment includes: imports such as Corona (owned by Modelo) and Heineken; and a variety of craft beers.

According to the department’s complaint, the U.S. beer market is already highly concentrated, and prices are increased by strategic interactions among the largest brewers, including ABI and MillerCoors. ABI generally acts as the price leader, implementing annual price increases in the sub-premium, premium and premium plus segments of the U.S. beer industry. MillerCoors and other brewers have typically joined the ABI price increases, while Modelo has not.

By pricing aggressively, Modelo–through its importer, Crown Imports–puts pressure on ABI to maintain or lower prices, especially in certain parts of the country. As a result, Modelo has become a particularly important competitor in the U.S. market.

The complaint quotes internal company documents demonstrating both ABI’s determination to maintain its upward price leadership in the U.S. beer industry and Modelo’s present-day position as a significant competitive threat to ABI:

  • ABI has implemented a “conduct plan,” whereby ABI hopes to establish “the highest level of [price] followership” by its large rivals by being as “consistent,” “simple” and “transparent” as possible;

  • ABI believes that its conduct plan provides the highest possibility of “sustaining a price increase” and “ensuring competition does not believe they can take share through pricing”;

  • By contrast, Modelo’s pricing strategy in the United States is known as the “momentum plan” and aims to narrow the “price gap” between Modelo’s imports and domestic premium beers, such as ABI’s Bud Light, stealing market share from ABI by enticing consumers to “trade up” to Modelo beer; and

  • ABI executives acknowledge that Modelo has “put increasing pressure” on ABI competitively, and that Modelo’s strategy is at odds with ABI’s well-established practice of leading prices upward with the expectation that its competitors will follow.

The complaint also discusses ABI’s efforts to target Corona. ABI considered Corona to be a significant threat, and launched Bud Light Lime in 2008 to compete with Corona. ABI went as far as to mimic Corona’s distinctive clear bottle. Ultimately, instead of trying to compete head-to-head with its own product, Bud Light Lime, ABI is thwarting competition by buying Modelo.

The department alleges that ABI’s acquisition of total ownership and control of Modelo would eliminate the existing competition between ABI and Modelo, further concentrating the beer industry, enhancing ABI’s market power and facilitating coordinated pricing between ABI and the remaining large players. Consumers would, as a result, see higher prices and less innovation.

The department’s complaint also alleges that ABI and Modelo efforts to remedy the anticompetitive aspects of their transaction are inadequate. The complaint states that ABI has agreed to sell Modelo’s existing 50 percent interest in Crown to its Crown joint venture partner, Constellation. ABI would also enter into an exclusive agreement to supply Constellation with Modelo beer to import into the United States, although ABI can terminate this supply agreement after 10 years and would retain the Modelo brands and its brewing and bottling facilities.

“The companies’ attempt to fix this anticompetitive deal through t he sale of Modelo’s existing interest in Crown and a temporary supply agreement is not sufficient to prevent consumer harm from ABI’s acquisition of its competitor, Modelo,” said Baer.

The complaint states that the combined effect of the proposed acquisition of Modelo and the proposed fix is to eliminate from the marketplace a sophisticated brewing firm with a long history of success and replace it with an importer which will own no brands or brewing facilities and be totally dependent on ABI for its supply of Corona and other Modelo brands. The documents in the case show that as Crown’s CEO wrote to his employees after the acquisition was announced: “our #1 competitor will now be our supplier…it is not currently or will not, going forward, be ‘business as usual.’” The department’s complaint said that not only will competition be harmed by the loss of Modelo as a competitor, but by removing an independent brewer–Modelo–from the market, strategically coordinated pricing will become easier in the future.

ABI is a Belgian corporation with its principal place of business in Leuven, Belgium. In 2011, ABI had revenues of approximately $39 billion. ABI currently has a 43 percent voting interest and a 50.35 percent economic interest in Modelo. ABI has stated in its annual reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it does not have voting or other effective control of Modelo. Through the proposed acquisition, ABI would acquire control of, and the remaining economic interest in Modelo.

Modelo is a Mexican corporation with its principal place of business in Mexico City. In 2011, Modelo had revenues of approximately $7 billion.

    Anheuser-Busch InBev Statement Regarding DOJ Action
    The U.S. Department of Justice’s action seeking to block the proposed combination between AB InBev (Euronext: ABI; NYSE: BUD) and Grupo Modelo is inconsistent with the law, the facts and the reality of the market place. On 29 June 2012, the companies announced an agreement under which AB InBev will acquire the remaining stake in Grupo Modelo that it does not already own. We remain confident in our position, and we intend to vigorously contest the DOJ’s action in federal court. Given today’s development, we no longer expect the deal to close during the first quarter of 2013. We will comment further once we have reviewed the DOJ filing.

    Anheuser-Busch Stock fell over 6%.

    Constellation Brands is disappointed with the DOJ decision. The proposed transaction would further establish Crown Imports as a more independent and competitive entity and solidify its position as a major player in the U.S. beer industry. We will provide further comment when appropriate.

    Given today’s development, we no longer expect the deal to close during the first calendar quarter of 2013 but we ultimately look forward to an expeditious resolution.

Constellation Brands Stock prices fell over $7 per share

Update 2/1:  Anheuser-Busch may need to sell a brewery to make the lawsuit go away which may be a deal breaker.  This from Bloomberg:

AB InBev was unwilling to sell Modelo’s newest state-of-the-art beer bottling plant, located near Piedras Negras, Mexico, as a concession to win approval, two people familiar with the matter said last month. Selling the plant would take the supply of Corona in the U.S. out of AB InBev’s hands, reducing the likelihood the brewer could control Corona prices.

Any requirement to sell the brewery would be a dealbreaker, said the people at the time, asking not to be named because the matter wasn’t public.

The proposed transaction between AB InBev and Modelo would marry Bud Light, the top-selling U.S. brand, with Corona, the biggest import, and create a combined company with estimated revenue of about $47 billion this year.

Today we get to see the label for DC Brau The Rider Limited Release Red Ale.  This beer was previously a draft-only beer, but now it will find it’s way to 22oz bottles.  The Rider is a west-coast style red ale that uses a Belgian yeast strain, simcoe hops and an experimental hop (that will forever remain nameless) and it will come in at 7.3%ABV.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day we have a new brew coming from Bridgeport Brewing called Bear Hug Cherry Chocolate Stout.  This new ale brewed with imageCherries & cocoa will be packaged in 22oa bottles and kegs, and come in at 7.5% ABV.  Bear Hug uses “generous” amounts of roasted malt & cocoa…and to top it off they add 15-pounds of dark sweet cherries per barrel.  This one sounds great.

Smuttynose Short Batch: ParadoX Session IPA Coming 2/8

We brewed another IPA in the Short Batch Series; this one is called ParadoX.

ParadoX is a beer of the moment. It's a session IPA, brewed with an experimental hop variety (01210, it's really lemony) and a portion of New England grown malt. Our brewing staff has wanted to brew one of these for a long time and just about everyone in the company has been waiting to drink one. So, why'd we do it now?
Way back in late 2012, David Yarrington, our intrepid Director of Brewing Operations, was approached to brew an anniversary beer for Mohegan Sun's Sun Wine Fest's 10th anniversary (we've got the whole craft beer crossover thing covered here too), he called up one of our hop brokers to inquire about an experimental variety he'd smelled at hop harvest last fall. Despite there being only 5 acres of this variety growing in the whole world, we were able to get enough pellets to brew ParadoX.

The Sun Wine Fest, which took place January 25-27 at the Connecticut casino, only needed about two barrels of the batch, so we've got the rest to ship out to beer lovers. We've saved you the ticket price, but you also missed on the chance to eat some incredible food and meet some really talented chefs.

ParadoX is light bodied, loaded with lemony-citrus hop flavor and very drinkable, but you don't have to take my word for it, here are a few reviews:

Organized by Hop Growers of America, the American Hop Convention is an annual industry meeting that brings together hop growers, merchants and researchers, as well as craft breweries. This was the 57th convention year and the first time it was hosted by a craft brewery—a special chance for us to show our gratitude.

For us and other breweries—about 25 this year—the multi-day convention is a forum to talk hops, an ingredient Ken has treasured since he first smelled them around the age of 10. The convention sessions tackled an array of issues from hop-drying techniques to sustainability matters like water and power use.

“If we can help you better the product for the both of us,” Ken said, “that’s our goal.”

American craft beer is undoubtedly influencing the evolution of hop breeding and growing.

“We’re looking for hops that are the star of the show,” Ken said.

Aroma hops are soaring in popularity and almost matching alpha hop demand. This shift affects growers’ farms, making paramount brewers’ partnerships with suppliers. We need to ensure our hop growers are healthy.

At the convention, Chris Swersey, technical brewing projects coordinator for the Brewers Association (BA), shared some figures from a BA craft brewers survey (not a total). In the 2011 production year, craft brewers used on average 1.14 pounds of hops per barrel of beer. Chris anticipates that average jumping to around 1.2 or more in the 2013 production year—more notable when you consider how many new craft breweries are on the verge of opening. To further the wow factor, US craft brewers have doubled their collective beer sold since 2001, up from 5.35 million barrels to nearly 13 million barrels in the 2012 production year.

The Bruery Releasing Saison De Lente & Grant is pAle This Weekend

Between First Firkin Friday, the release of another brand new beer and the Super Bowl, we should have a pretty busy weekend on our hands.

1. First Firkin Friday: For this month's installment of First Firkin Friday we will be tapping a firkin of our faro-style ale with pineapple. This young version of our base sour blonde ale has been sweetened with sugar and pineapple to create a delicious Friday afternoon treat. Like all firkins, we only have one and it will stay tapped until it is gone.

2. Grant is pAle: As a going away present to Grant Phillips, our batch #300 winner and former brewer, we let him spend his last day at work brewing one of his own recipes. The result is a 5.9% ABV Belgian-style pale ale brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. This brew will be tapped on Friday and should be on all weekend long. 'Grant is Pale' is not only a fitting farewell to one of our great brewers but also a lasting testament to one of the only people we know that needs to use SPF 100 sunscreen.

3. Saison De Lente Release: We'll be releasing our Spring seasonal, Saison De Lente, this weekend. This brew is light blonde in color with a fresh hoppiness and a wild and rustic Brettanomyces character. Bottles and draft will be available Friday.



4. Superbowl
: We love the Super Bowl but we're not exactly fans of the Monday afterwards. To commemorate this phenomenon, this Sunday we'll be pouring a big beer with a fitting name -- Grey Monday. Grey Monday is a super limited variation of Black Tuesday aged on hazelnuts. That popular brew will only be available to those of you who like us on one of our social media sites: Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Show us that you 'Like' us and get access to that awesome brew! We'll be showing the game and supplies will be limited, so feel free to come in when we open!



5. Sour In The Rye for RS members

PA Governor Corbett Discusses Privatization Plans

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 31, 2013/mbb/ -- Governor Tom Corbett was in Philadelphia today continuing to promote his plan to privatize the liquor system in Pennsylvania and his commitment to the $1 billion in proceeds from the process going to education funding.

Corbett was joined today by members of the House leadership, Rep. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) and Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York), along with Rep. John Taylor (R-Philadelphia), chair of the Liquor Control Committee and Rep. Bill Adolph (R-Delaware), chair of the Appropriations Committee. He was also joined by LCB Chairman Skip Brion .

Corbett said that the $1 billion will be used to create the Passport for Learning Block Grant, which will provide flexibility to schools, allowing our public schools, instead of Harrisburg, to decide what their students need.

The grant will focus on four priority areas: school safety, enhanced early education programs, individualized learning and science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and programs.

"Our proposal is part of my commitment to changing Harrisburg, streamlining government and moving Pennsylvania forward," Corbett said. "Our plan gives consumers what they want by increasing choice and convenience, and helps to secure our future by adding $1 billion in funding toward the education of our children, without raising any taxes."

The $1 billion in revenue will come from the three to four year process of selling the LCB: $575 million from the wholesale license process, $224 million from the wine and spirits retail auction process, $107 million from the wine/beer license application process and $112.5 million in the enhanced beer distributor application process.

"Pennsylvania and Utah are the only two states in the country who have fully state-controlled liquor systems," Corbett said. "Our plan sells both the wholesale and retail arms of the state-run liquor business."

"I want Pennsylvanians to enjoy the same convenience that virtually every other American today has," Corbett said.

"My plan gets the state completely out of the liquor business. The state will no longer be a marketer of alcohol; instead, it will now focus on its role as a regulator," Corbett said. "It also creates an unprecedented opportunity for economic expansion for private sector employers while remaining revenue neutral for the state."

Currently, there about 600 state stores in Pennsylvania, the governor's plan allows for 1200 wine and spirits stores.

During the previous decade, the state stores' expenses have grown faster than their revenues, Corbett added.

Corbett said that his plan will offer Pennsylvania consumers greatly increased convenience and choice, because they will be able to buy the products they desire in a simpler, more accessible and more rational way. For example, consumers will be able to buy beer and wine where they shop for groceries, buy six packs of beer at a distributor instead of being forced to buy an entire case, and buy a six pack of beer at a convenience store.

Currently, Pennsylvania has far fewer alcohol retail establishments per resident than the average state. This proposal would allow the number of establishments to be naturally driven by the market, as it is in other states.

Corbett said that his plan balances the increased amount of retailers with additional enforcement measures.

The governor's plan calls for significantly enhanced fines for selling to minors and visibly intoxicated persons, with penalty ranges increasing from $1,000 - $5,000 to $5,000 - $10,000. The additional money from license surcharges and increased fines will be designated for enforcement efforts of the Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, who will see a 22 percent funding increase under this plan. Corbett also proposes a 75 percent funding increase for alcohol treatment and prevention efforts.

Corbett's plan also calls for mandatory minimum license suspensions for businesses convicted of second and subsequent offenses for sales to minors or to VIPs. This will cause violations to be more meaningful, instead of being considered just a cost of doing business.

New alcohol retailers, such as wine and spirits stores, grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores must all use an ID scanner device before they can sell alcohol.

Corbett also explained that his proposal is fiscally neutral. Every dollar not returned to the state due to the divestiture of the LCB is returned to the state through restructured fees. He also noted that history in other states shows that many of the private sector jobs created will have comparable compensation.

Corbett also noted that his plan includes measures for affected LCB employees, including tax credits for businesses that employ separated workers, educational credits, civil service credits, individual employment plans and a multi-agency committee to help displaced employees find re-employment.

Along with the majority leadership, liquor control committee chair and the appropriations committee chair, Corbett was also joined at the event by Rep. Becky Corbin (R-Chester), Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin) and Rep. John Lawrence (R-Chester).

5th annual Zwickelmania returns offering visitors a unique look inside Oregon breweries around the state celebrate the wood anniversary with tours, tastings and specials.

Over 23,000 visitors set their sights on Oregon breweries during Zwickelmania in 2012 and that figure is projected to grow on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the fifth annual Zwickelmania.

Free Zwickelmania shuttle buses are located in Portland, Bend, Salem and Eugene and entry is free at all participating breweries. A full list of shuttle schedules is at http://oregonbeer.org/zwickelmania.

“Each year, Oregon breweries are seeing a rising interest from people who are excited to see the inner workings of a brewery,” says Oregon Brewers Guild executive director, Brian Butenschoen. “This is that rare time of the year where people get a backstage pass to the brewers and their breweries.”

Wynkoop Releases Belgorado Belgian IPA 12oz Cans

The first cases of our new and fourth canned beer, Belgorado Belgian-Style India Pale Ale, are now hitting select stores in the Denver area.

Our small-batch, Belgium-meets-Colorado thriller combines the wonders of two of the world’s best beer cultures with Wynkoop artisan brewing and our local farm-to-fermenter thinking.



First released in the fall of 2010 as a seasonal, draft-only, wet-hopped beer, the Belgian-style IPA is now a canned, dry-hopped creation.

It’s hopped with whole leaf hops from Misty Mountain Hop Farm, a pioneering little hop farm in Olathe, CO.

Belgorado is built with a Belgian-style malted barley from Colorado Malting Company, a small, family owned farm and specialty maltster in Alamosa, CO.

The beer gives us a chance to take our buy-local mantra to an especially high level. While we showcase and support two of Colorado’s micro-farmers, and create a new and devoutly Colorado style of beer.

These home-state ingredients are skillfully blended by Wynkoop head brewer Andy Brown and his staff, then fermented with a Belgian yeast.

Deschutes Brewery Sales Department Adds Two New People

31 January 2013/mbb/ – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery has hired Craig Marshall as its new South Central zone sales manager and Gavin Stoub as its new Illinois market sales manager.  Marshall, who is based in Phoenix, AZ, will oversee sales activities and team members in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Utah and New Mexico. Stoub, who is based in the Chicago area, will manage distributor and account relationships within the state of Illinois.

In his position as zone manager, Marshall will be overseeing the sales managers in each of the states within his region. He will be providing strategic direction for sales while also building relationships and providing customer service to on and off-premise accounts. Marshall most recently served as a national account manager for AmeriGas for the western half of the United States, and has also held sales management positions for companies like the Craft Brewers Alliance, United States Beverage, Coors Brewing Company and Arizona Beverage Distributing Company. He holds a degree in business from Arizona State University.

As market sales manager for Illinois, Stoub will be working closely with distributor Wirtz Beverage in managing Deschutes Brewery brands, including establishing performance goals. He will be responsible for providing customer service and customer education on Deschutes Brewery beers to accounts, and running promotional events in the region. Stoub most recently served as a market manager for Goose Island Beer Company, and also has a strong background in the restaurant business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Eastern Illinois University.

Ommegang & Union Beer Donate $9300 To Hurricane Sandy Relief

(Cooperstown, NY) - January 30th, 2013/mbb/ - Brewery Ommegang presented a check for $9300 to Barrier Brewing Company on Long Island this week. The donation includes contributions from the brewery and from Union Beer Distributers in Brooklyn, N.Y., who distribute Ommegang ales in the NYCity area.

Barrier Brewing, located in Oceanside, N.Y., was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The four-month old facility suffered more than $100,000 in damages when the building flooded. Following the storm, Ommegang’s CEO, Simon Thorpe, reached out to nearly 40 breweries in the storm-affected area offering assistance ranging from donating supplies to full-scale brewing. Barrier, who was hit harder than most, accepted the offer.

In December, the two breweries worked together to create Barrier Relief Ale, a Belgian-style IPA, brewed at Ommegang with Barrier’s recipe. Barrier brewers were at Ommegang at the beginning of December when the beer was brewed and again later in the month to taste the first keg. The hoppy collaboration was described by Barrier brewer and co-owner Craig Frymark as exactly the kind of beer he’d want to drink while cleaning up his brewery.

Union Beer Distributers donated $10 of every keg they sold for a total of $3200 and Ommegang donated all of the profit from the collaboration, roughly $6100. Barrier Brewing Company brewed their first post-Sandy beer at the beginning of January and is hoping to be full-operational by the end of the month. Barrier Relief Ale is currently on tap at bars and taverns in the NYC-area.

Sierra Nevada Ovila NEW 4-Pack Packaging (Quad & Saison)

Ovila® Abbey Ales are a series of Belgian-inspired beers brewed in collaboration with the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA. An homage to the time-honored monastic brewing tradition, Ovila Abbey Ales combine the quality and craft of those dedicated artisans with a dose of American brewing innovation. Featuring ingredients grown by the monks on the grounds of the abbey, Ovila Abbey Ales are a fresh twist on the ancient brewing tradition. 

Chico, CA (30 Jan 2013/mbb/)  Fruits harvested from monastic grounds inspire the latest collaborative beers between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the nearby Abbey of New Clairvaux. The ongoing Ovila Abbey Ale series features Belgian-style ales brewed in the centuries-old abbey tradition. Now available is Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums, which features plums from the monks’ 130 acres of plum orchards, and this summer will see the release of Ovila Abbey Saison with Mandarin Oranges and Peppercorns, brewed with mandarin oranges grown at the monastery in Vina, CA


“We’ve collaborated with the Abbey of New Clairvaux since 2010, and have brewed several great Ovila beers,” said Ken Grossman, Sierra Nevada’s founder. “Using ingredients grown at the monastery—harvested by the monks themselves—strengthens our connection and shows the evolution of the Ovila series. We’re of course excited to share these two beers.”

The monks of the Abbey of New Clairvaux follow the Rule of St. Benedict, which directs them to live by the work of their hands. The monks operate nearly 600 acres of working farmland and produce several crops, including plums, oranges, walnuts and wine grapes, among others.

Previous beers from the Ovila series include the 2012 World Beer Cup Bronze Medal-winning Belgian-style Dubbel, a Saison, and a Belgian Quad. Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums is a dark ale that boasts aromas of caramel, rich malt, and dark fruit balanced by the spiciness and delicate fruity notes of a traditional Belgian yeast. Ovila Abbey Saison with Mandarin Oranges and Peppercorns is a blonde farmhouse ale whose notes of lemon, pepper, grass, and herbs are balanced by the tang of mandarin orange and a spicy kick of white pepper.

“It’s special to see our community’s labor directly benefit the creativity of these beers,” said Father Paul Mark Schwan, Abbot of New Clairvaux. “For those who try them, we hope the ingredients lend themselves to a unique experience.”

Four-packs and draught of Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums can now be found at beer-centric venues in select markets. Sierra Nevada’s Beer Locator tool can help track down the beer: www.sierranevada.com/beer-locator. Ovila Abbey Saison with Mandarin Oranges and Peppercorns is slated for a June release.
