Surly Releasing The Edict

One of our more unique Oktoberfest offerings allows you to choose your own flavor profile. It’s also one of the most traditional and part of our brewer-focused Intelligent Design series.

Chad Arnhold has been homebrewing for a decade. The Twin Cities native started brewing professionally at New London’s Goat Ridge Brewing before starting at Surly in 2022. For this year’s Oktoberfest, he pitched an idea for a Berliner Weisse served as it often is in Germany, with flavored syrups added after the cloudy, sour beer is poured.

That beer is called The Edict, and it’s on tap now.

“I wanted to design a simple, sour wheat beer that could stand on its own, without any fruit additions, while still having pleasant, fruity aromatics,” says Arnhold. “The Barbe Rouge hops give this Berliner enjoyable notes of citrus and subtle red fruits.”

Arnhold chose cranberry and woodruff syrups for the post-pour additions. “More tart, go with cranberry. More sweetness, throw in some woodruff. The choice is yours.”

Choose your Berliner adventure now through Sunday, Sept. 24.
