Anheuser-Busch, MADD and Uber Partner to Help Prevent Drunk Driving in Houston this Labor Day Through the Decide to Ride Campaign

From Anheuser-Busch:

Decide to Ride – first launched in September 2021 – aims to prevent drunk driving by raising awareness of the critical issue of alcohol-impaired driving and encouraging consumers to plan ahead for a sober ride

August 30, 2022 – Today, the country’s leading brewer, Anheuser-Busch, the nation’s largest drunk driving victim services and advocacy nonprofit, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and ridesharing platform, Uber, announced the next phase of their joint Decide to Ride campaign in Houston, where the coalition is combatting alcohol-impaired driving this summer, including over the upcoming Labor Day weekend in partnership with the City of Houston.  zzubreebym

Throughout the summer, the coalition has teamed up with local sponsorship partners and wholesalers, including Houston officials, Silver Eagle Distributors, the Houston Astros and the Cynthia Wood Mitchell Pavilion to encourage sports fans and concertgoers in Houston to plan ahead for a safe ride home when drinking. Ahead of Labor Day weekend, this joint effort remains critical for raising awareness and promoting road safety by providing ridesharing opportunities to prevent drunk driving, including locally available discount codes on Uber rides.

"As we celebrate this Labor Day weekend, let’s each do our part to keep our communities and roads safe by planning for a safe ride home. Please do not drink and drive. Drunk driving is 100% preventable,” said Texas Representative Mary Ann Perez. “I am proud to support this partnership between Anheuser-Busch, MADD, and Uber and I hope it helps provide you with a safe ride to and from your celebrations.”

“There are too many impaired drivers on our streets, and their dangerous actions jeopardize the lives of innocent people. It makes sense for the City of Houston to partner with MADD, Anheuser-Busch, and Uber on this important initiative to end impaired driving by incentivizing alternative options and underscoring the importance of planning ahead,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This Labor Day, we ask everyone in our community to do their part to keep friends, family, and neighbors safe by planning for a safe mode of transportation.

“As millions of Texans look forward to celebrating the Labor Day weekend, we encourage them to make a plan for a safe ride home if they decide to drink – whether that’s rideshare, public transit or a non-drinking friend or family member.” said Houston Council Member Tarsha Jackson. “We are proud to partner with MADD, Anheuser-Busch, and Uber to be part of the solution to end drunk driving and remind our communities to keep our neighborhood roads safe.”

“There has been a great deal of excitement behind the Decide to Ride campaign since it first launched a year ago, and we’re excited to expand our reach this Labor Day weekend,” said John Johnson, President, Silver Eagle Distributors Houston, LLC . “Silver Eagle Houston plans to share the vital message by talking with consumers in the market, running Decide to Ride messages in local publications, and activating at the Astros game on Monday, September 5, 2022. Our commitment to putting an end to impaired driving is unwavering, and we will continue to do our part to encourage consumers to Decide to Ride.”

Anheuser-Busch, MADD and Uber joined forces and launched the Decide to Ride campaign in September 2021 as part of a groundbreaking first-of-its-kind coalition aimed at bringing an end to drunk driving.

The Decide to Ride campaign focuses on driving behavior change by connecting with consumers before they even take that first sip – “ because you can’t drive drunk, if you don’t drive there.” Consumers who are aware of the campaign are over 40 percent more likely to use a ridesharing app to avoid alcohol-impaired driving, according to early internal campaign research developed by the coalition.

Building on last year’s launch , Anheuser-Busch, MADD and Uber are partnering with local sports teams and concert venues to bring the campaign to life in Houston this summer through digital creative, print and out-of-home advertising, promotions at local events, including at an upcoming Houston Astros game and concerts at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and signage at retailers sharing a key message for consumers – “If You Drink, Don’t Drive. Decide to Ride .”

The partnership will also be providing locally available discounts on Uber rides in Houston to help consumers plan ahead for a safe ride to and from their Labor Day celebrations. For Labor Day, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2022, riders are encouraged to redeem promo code DTRLABORDAY to receive up to $10 off on each of 2 UberX or UberXL rides during the Labor Day weekend.*

"Labor Day is all about honoring our nation’s workforce and enjoying the last days of summer. What better way to do that than by helping to keep our roads and communities safe,” said Colleen Lucas, Vice President of Community Impact at Anheuser-Busch. “We are proud to extend this important campaign to Houston ahead of the holiday weekend to help provide people a safe ride home and further our commitment to preventing drunk driving through education and action all summer long.”

“The Decide to Ride campaign encourages people to make a plan for a safe ride before taking the first drink, every time they consume alcohol,” said MADD National President Alex Otte. “This Labor Day weekend and always, if you drink, don’t drive. We can all help end drunk driving by making the right choice to always celebrate with a plan.”

“As an independent study from the Journal of American Medical Association showed, Uber has a direct impact on the reduction of the rate of drinking and driving crashes in the city of Houston,” said Kristin Smith, Head of Road Safety Policy at Uber. “We’re proud to continue the Decide to Ride campaign in Houston this Labor Day weekend, and do our part to remind everyone to leave their keys at home if they choose to drink this holiday weekend.”
