When I think back to my early days of drinking and learning about craft beer, today’s brewery always falls into the irreverent category. I certainly don’t mean that in a bad way, but when you look back at the early breweries from 30-years ago, there weren’t many using controversial names let alone being famous for it.
I think it started with the Ralph Steadman artwork that Flying Dog uses, and then I suspect it helped that they launched (and subsequently fought in court for the right to use) a beer named Raging Bitch. Of course the beer was really good and the artwork amazing, but at the time I only remembered the controversy.
Jump forward to 2020 and Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, MD is getting ready to celebrate their 30th Anniversary, and while the controversial names may have come and (some have) gone, the beer and artwork remain outstanding.
Ironically enough, today’s beer is following on the heels of Tropical Bitch (a tropical variant of Raging Bitch) and it is called Tropical Truth. This tropical-take on The Truth imperial IPA uses mango and passionfruit to amp up the juice-forward hop and I think you’ll agree that it worked well. Of course it helps that the base beer was “was scientifically engineered to be a near-perfect IPA using knowledge from Flying Dog’s Single Hop Series.”
I’ll admit I’m a big fan of The Truth and I’m excited see that Tropical Truth will keep the original beer’s AbV and hop flavors…and naturally I can’t wait to try it….so off we go…
Flying Dog Tropical Truth
ABV: 8.7%
Style: Hazy IPA
Packaging: 12oz Bottles
Appearance: Bright golden copper
Aroma: Citrus, mango & prominent hops
Mouthfeel: Medium & slightly sticky
Taste: Big juicy flavors of mango and citrus up front with tropical fruits and subtle resinous finish.
Overall: Tropical Truth is a really unique imperial IPA that is both juice-forward and hop-forward and pleasantly boozy. The balance of mango and passion fruit really works well with the hop profile to create a really drinkable and satisfying IIPA.
