Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Ommegang Game Of Thrones For The Throne
I’ve been lucky enough to try all of the exciting beers coming from Brewery Ommegang for their HBO Game Of Thrones Series of beers.  From blonde ales to barrel-aged imperial stouts, I’ve really enjoyed tasting them all, so I’m excited to get my hands on the latest HBO/Ommegang collaboration, For The Throne.

This new beer continues the Game Of Thrones theme as it follows along with the HBO TV show.  For The Throne is a “tribute to those who aspire to be the final occupant of the Iron Throne” and the brewers at Ommegang were asked what would they do for the throne?  Their answer was this unique co-fermented strong golden ale that is brewed with Pinot Grigio and Viognier grapes.  If that’s not enough winemaking influence, the beer is also bottle conditioned with Champagne yeast and as Ommegang president Doug Campbell put it, “This style of beer, often called a ‘oenobeer,’ is a rapidly expanding area of study for us. For The Throne is our first of co-fermentation beer of 2019, and the only one we’ve launched under the Game of Thrones banner.”

Of course I can’t wait to try it so off we go…

Ommegang For The Throne pours a deep golden orange color with some toasted biscuit and prominent floral aromas.  I also found some really pleasant stone fruit and lemon citrus aromas as well that I really enjoyed.  The beer has a nice toffee sweetness up front followed by flavors of the many aromas we found like toasted grain, floral hops, lemon and citrus peel as well as the traditional flavors we love with Belgian-yeast.  The mouthfeel is sparkling and delicate and I really liked the refreshing and somewhat dry finish of the beer.  The presence of wine-like qualities melded with a Belgian golden ale really made for a unique drinking experience from aromas to flavors and body.  The beer feels and drinks like a fine wine but the Bravo and Saaz hops on-board really balance out the beer-presence nicely and leave you with a bright and balanced finish.

Overall this has to be one of my favorite Brewery Ommegang Game Of Thrones beers and if I had my way, Ommegang would gain the Iron Throne.  Brewery Ommegang For The Throne will be released nationwide in early April (just in time for the 4/14 return of the HBO Game Of Thrones Season.)  The beer will hit 9.5%-AbV and it is packaged in 750ml bottles…so get out there and try one for yourself.  And when you do try it, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
