Just a few short months ago I sampled some really interesting beers from Coppertail Brewing in Tampa, FL. I’ll admit that I not only had never had a beer from Coppertail before that sampling, but I was pretty sure I had never sampled a pistachio imperial stout or a smoked Mexican lager. Turns out the beers were really good, so I was really excited to see a new beer arriving at mybeerbuzz headquarters from Coppertail.
If you’re not familiar, Coppertail was founded by attorney Kent Bailey in a former Hellman’s Mayo factory on Adamo Dr. in Ybor City. The brewery is named after the mythical sea monster that lives in Tampa Bay and the tasting room features 20-taps and a dog-friendly outdoor space. Coppertail uses a 50bbl Rolec brewhouse with 1000bbl of fermentation space overseen by brewmaster Casey Hughes (formerly of Flying Fish).
Coppertail Brewing beers are “Florida inspired and Tampa brewed” and they all feature some really cool artwork by artist Evan B. Harris. Their packaging has a distinct family resemblance and you can’t miss them in the beer cooler. Today we get to sample a new IPA from Coppertail….so off we go.
Today’s beer is part of the Alpha Hunt IPA Series and it is called Pax Odeon…The Space Explorer. This series of IPA’s are “dedicated to discovery of new hops and the constant hunt for innovative IPA’s” and the series includes beers called Winston Sheffield, Kiko Santiago, Sorcha O’Sullivan and the latest seasonal release Pax Odeon.
As the story goes:
A man by the name of Pax Odeon was detained by local officials after several residents of the Bay Area complained about the mad man’s disjointed rants.
“He claims to be from the future and he crash landed here on Earth while he was hunting some mythical sea creature in outer space … yeah ok buddy” commented an anonymous source.
The “Space Man from the Future” did have some peculiar technology and dress. More details will be released as the story unfolds…
The beer itself is of course an IPA and it pours a bright gold-orange color with a big punch of citrus, grapefruit and resinous pine in the aromas. The mouthfeel is soft with a slightly sticky feel (this is a good thing). The flavors have a really nice mix of grapefruit dryness with a late punch of earthy pine and passionfruit. Pax Odeon leans into more of a double IPA for me, and at 8.4%-AbV, that seems to make sense. The beer is brewed with Simcoe, Mosaic, Loral and Sabro hops and the balance of citrusy versus piney is really well done. Pax Odeon finishes a bit on the sweet side with just a touch of boozy late in the game. Overall this beer is a really nice play on an IPA that seems to want to be a double IPA and I really enjoyed the blend of hops on board.
Coppertail Pax Odeon is available beginning 10/18 in 16oz canned 4-packs so get out there and try it for yourself. And when you do try it, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
