Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Portland Cider Cranberry Seasonal Cider (Review)

Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Portland Cider Cranberry Seasonal CiderIt’s cider season!  And while I think that statement is normally reserved for the apple cider that shows up at the road-side stands every fall, I think todays cider really does have “fall” written all over it.
The more cider I sample, the more I’ve come to appreciate the subtle differences, the unique variations and the seasonal releases.  Today’s cider sampling is just such a seasonal cider and it comes to us from Portland Cider Co. in Clackamas, OR.

This cider is their fall seasonal release and it is called quite simply Cranberry Cider.  You may already have guessed by the name, but this cider is a blend of Northwest-grown apples and cranberries.  The cranberry juice is blended in after fermentation and you can’t miss it’s contribution to the color (and flavor).  Cranberry Cider pours a rich ruby red cranberry color with a punch of tart apples and cranberry in the aromas.  The mouthfeel is slightly effervescent and full-bodied; and the cranberries definitely lead the way in the flavors.  The tart to sweet balance makes Cranberry Cider very refreshing and I really liked how well the apple and cranberry flavors merge.  Yes it reminds me a bit of Thanksgiving cranberry sauce, so I’d be curious to see how well it pairs with turkey-day dinner.
According to Portland Cider, “Cranberry Cider is also part of the #PickCider campaign, sponsored by the United States Assn. of Cider Makers, which celebrates Thanksgiving cider inspiration” and I definitely think this cider fits the bill.  Cranberry Cider rolls in at 6%-AbV and it was released in 22oz bottles on Nov 1st at the cidery’s two Portland-area pubs…so get out there and try this seasonal cider while supplies last.  And when you do try it, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
