From Double Mountain:
Hood River, OR – July 2018– Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom is proud to show their continued commitment to a sustainable future. We have created Hood River County’s largest solar powered generating facility on the roof of the Double Mountain Brewery’s Westside Warehouse. The Windmaster corner property was purchased in 2016 and now generates its own electricity using over 600 solar panels. .
The solar installation was completed July 1 with the help of Commercial Competitive Roofing as well as the Oregon Energy Trust. “We are excited to be providing both roofing and solar for Double Mountain Brewery's cold storage facility. This project really sets the standard for sustainability while cutting electrical costs over the long run!” - Randy Feldhaus, Competitive Commercial Roofing. Using the summer sun we have already seen a tremendous amount of electricity generated, with the excess electricity being returned to the power grid. The 300,000 plus kw/year generated (roughly equivalent to the total annual energy needs of 40 Hood River homes) will offset most of the warehouses electrical demands, putting us on the path to a net-zero energy building.
“The brewery uses energy to refrigerate our cider apples and cool our beer at multiple stages of brewing,” explains Matt Swihart, owner and brewmaster. “Investing in sustainable power generation allows us to continue to create great beer and cider, without contributing to global warming.” The current project is a continuation of Double Mountain’s dedication to their community and the planet, including purchasing 100% Blue Sky Oregon Renewable Energy, packaging beer and cider only in refillable bottles, reclaiming hot water during brewing operations and composting restaurant waste. Swihart continues, “Combined with our current bottles and our new refillable six packs coming out this month, the brewery is committed to achieving the softest impact on the earth we can possibly have.”
