As Fall 2017 starts to sneak into the northeast, I’m finally starting to give up easy-drinking summer ales in favor of more hearty and warming fall beers, and today’s beer is a perfect way to help make that transition.
Today’s beer comes to us from Indeed Brewing in Minneapolis, MN, and I think you’ll find it to be a really unique combination. This returning favorite is named Rum King and it is a Rum barrel-aged imperial stout that will now be packaged for the 2nd year in 12oz cans. Rum King is brewed with 7 different malts including Roasted barley, Chocolate Malt, German CaraAroma and flaked oats. The beer also hits a surprisingly hoppy 55 IBU thanks in part to the use of Glacier hops. If that’s not enough fun, Rum King is aged in freshly emptied Rum Barrels…So how is it?
Rum King pours a deep oil-black color with a really pretty tan head. The aromas start with Rum and chocolate and they finish with a dry coffee-like roastiness. The flavors have a very prominent deep chocolate sweetness that is nicely punctuated by the toffee, vanilla and Rum flavors that follow. There is a pleasant raisin flavor in the middle with a slightly smokey bite. The roastiness and coffee linger nicely at the end and the finish is slightly boozy and warming. The beer has a ton of body and mouthfeel and we found it to be very pleasant to drink. At 10.5%-AbV this beer will get your attention, but we found it to be a really nice way to kick off fall.
Overall we found this malt-leaning imperial stout to be a really drinkable beer and one of our favorite Rum barrel-aged brews. Add in the fact that it’s available in 12oz cans, and I think we’ve found our perfect fire pit brew for the 2017 fall season.
Be sure to try Indeed Brewing Rum King 2017, and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
