Catawba Brewing will release a Small Batch India Pale Lager (5.8% ABV) on Thursday, March 9, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Hiker Happy Hour (HHH) will be held at Catawba’s South Slope location from 5:30-7:30pm. Celebrate Spring with staff, volunteers, and members of ATC’s Southern Region (NC, TN, GA) at the last Asheville HHH of the season. ATC members who attend any Asheville HHH will be entered in the grand prize raffle for A.T. swag, including an ENO Hammock. New members joining on Thursday will be entered, too.
This hybrid beer style combines the clean crisp character of an Old World Lager with the hop-forward aroma and flavor notes of an India Pale Ale. Using a comparable malt bill to a Vienna Lager, the beer was cold-fermented with lager yeast to provide a canvas of lightly toasted bread with a hint of sweetness. Then diverging from tradition, the beer was aggressively hopped like an IPA, showcasing the Huell Melon hop. This particular hop variety (first introduced in 2012 in Hüll, Germany) features a unique flavor profile unfamiliar to most American IPAs. Expect medium bitterness with distinctive notes of white grape, honeydew melon, and strawberry, complementing its subtle malt backbone.
