It’s always fun getting to test drive some new beers from Devils Backbone. First off, the beer are always really unique and really good, but better yet, when they arrive on a Friday, it seems too good to be true.
Today we’re sampling not one, not two, not even three (or four) beers…but FIVE new DBB brews. Up first is their latest Trail Blazer Series release….Kilt Flasher. This beer is a Scottish ale with a great name and an equally great label; and as you would expect, Kilt Flasher is rich, malty and complex. Kilt Flasher has layers of malty and toffee flavors with a sweet middle and a slightly boozy and warming finish. At 8%-AbV and a sweet 20 IBU, this beer will get your attention, and with fall temperatures setting in, you’ll want to sip this one by the fire.
Next up we decided to dive into the new Adventure Pack sampler. Up first Berliner Metro Weiss. This German-style sour ale pours a pale straw color with lots of tart flavors. I think this one leans more toward tart than sour but it’s crisp, pleasantly acidic and refreshing. This beer hits a sessionable 3.9%-AbV.
We followed the Berliner with the Single Hop IPA, and I’ll admit this probably ended up being my favorite of the bunch. With pale ale-like flavors and a bit of west-coast IPA hoppiness this beer highlights Equinox hops and simple single-hop flavors. The AbV of 7.9 pushes this beer toward a double IPA and the 77 IBU helps end the beer with a hoppy punch. I really liked this beer.
Flor De Luna seemed an obvious next choice. This Belgian-style blonde was uncomplicated, floral and slightly fruity and the balance made it really drinkable. At 6.3%-AbV and 21 IBU this beer reminded me of some of the classic Belgian blonde ales I discovered when I first started enjoying better beers. I’d like to try this one again.
Finally we decided to sample Smokehouse Porter. I was thinking this one would be hard to follow and I was right. Smokehouse Porter is loaded with roasty and smoky aromas and some really rich toasted flavors. There’s an underlying creamy porter in there, but the smoky flavors definitely dominate. This beer hits 5.7%-AbV and a surprising 41 IBU.
The Devils Backbone Adventure Pack is available now as is Kilt Flasher , so put on your drinking shoes and get out there and try them all…
and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
