From Market Watch:
The two men, who met while working for a medical-instrument company, launched Mighty Squirrel in Massachusetts this past year with the protein-conscious, athletic market in mind. Think the folks who drink those power shakes after a workout. It also doesn’t hurt that protein-rich diets a la the paleo diet have been all the rage of late.
And how much protein are we talking about? Each 12-ounce bottle of Mighty Squirrel — the name is derived from something of an inside joke between the two founders — has 4 to 5 grams of protein (depending on the style), or about four times the amount found in your average brew. That’s because whey protein, the same kind found in many protein shakes, is actually added to the brew during the beer-making process.
Admittedly, 4 to 5 grams isn’t a lot in the big picture, since government recommendations call for 46 grams of protein per day for the average woman and 56 for the average man. But Manice and Pawar say if you’re going to enjoy a brew, particularly after an afternoon jog or a round of tennis, a beer like Mighty Squirrel (tag line: “Brewed for the finish line”), could be a sensible choice, although they insist they’re not making any specific health claims. But the two also say that taste is just as important a factor and that Mighty Squirrel was created with the craft beer-loving market in mind. “That’s the beauty of our beer. We’re not sacrificing” flavor, says Pawar.
