As the story goes, Major Hops gallops across the battlefield on his horse "Olde Ale" serving crocks of ale to the suffering soldiers.
Olde ale is a term commonly applied to darker, malty beers in England, generally well above 6% abv. Sometimes associated with stock ale or "keeping ale" where the beer is held and served only at the brewery.
