2015 Sustainability Award Goes to Devil’s Canyon Brewing

Sustainable San Mateo County’s 16th Annual Sustainability Awards dinner will honor Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to bringing sustainable practices to their work.



The Sustainable San Mateo County Awards Event is an inspiring evening that pays tribute to those working to make California’s San Mateo County region truly sustainable. The event will be held at the College of San Mateo’s Bayview Dining Room on March 26th. California State Senator Jerry Hill will lead the proceedings as emcee and auctioneer.



Attendees are treated to a networking hour, sustainable dinner and wine, entertaining live and silent auctions, and video presentations of the winners.



Since its founding in 2001, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company has followed a C.O.R.E. philosophy—C.O.R.E. being a “Culture Of Re-utilization Ethic.” In addition to making award-winning, sustainably handcrafted beer and root beer, the brewery has a storied history of intercepting materials destined for the local landfill and using them internally or ensuring they go to another business or group that can benefit by re-utilizing them.



Originally based in Belmont, California, the brewery relocated to the City of San Carlos in 2013. Their new site was initially the Varian Associates building (circa 1948) and most recently the home of Tesla Motor’s R&D unit.



Just as the former tenants were pioneers in their fields, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company’s renovation of the structure to accommodate the brewery and public event center showcases the progressive thinking and environmental stewardship that have been a hallmark of their business.



From re-claimed lumber to an infrastructure that boasts over 90% repurposed materials, Devil’s Canyon’s new facility is an authentic testament to their commitment to set the standard for innovative sustainability efforts.



“In combination with our working philosophy for brewing balanced, sustainably handcrafted beer, we operate our company with focus on balancing community/social equity, the environment, and sound economic principles,” stated Founder and CEO Chris Garrett. “In order for any one are area to succeed, they must all be in balance.”



The brewery’s mash tun is a repurposed Berkeley Farms milk storage tank, the wood that trims the stage, doors and bar in the adjoining event center came from a home they deconstructed. From office furniture, eye-wash stations and cabinets to a majority of the internal plumbing, brewery infrastructure and 3 rooms filled with every nut and bolt imaginable - if an object can be reutilized or repurposed, it has found a home in the brewery.



Opening the brewery to the public on Fridays gives residents from every part of the social spectrum a chance to meet, talk and share ideas in a family-friendly, community environment. As the public becomes more educated on the brewery’s actions, support for the philosophy is nurtured with friends, family, neighbors and coworkers.



The founders and staff of Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company believe whole-heartedly and have proven to themselves over the past 14 years of operation that sustainable practices allow Devil’s Canyon to give back more—by taking and using less.
