Hurricane Sandy “Surge Protector IPA” Co-Brew Coming From 8 Long Island Breweries

I’m still gathering details on this but it looks like 8 long Island, NY will be co-brewing a Sandy Relief IPA to benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims.  The brew will be created today (12/4) and it will included brewers from Blue Point Brewing, Barrier Brewing, Great South Bay Brewery, Blind Bat Brewery, Greenport Harbor Brewing, Long Ireland Brewing, Port Jeff Brewing and Spider Bite Brewing.  Stay tuned for details.

Details from the Gothamist:

Before the storm, a few of the breweries had already begun a project with beer writer Niko Krommydas and photographer Matt Furman for a video documentary about Long Island's flourishing beer community. Together they were going to make a beer to be featured at Long Island Craft Beer Week. But after Sandy tore through the area—causing, among other things, nearly $100,000 in damage to Barrier Brewing Co.'s new facility—they changed their plans. "This shifted from a creative project we would do in March or April to, 'OK, let's do this now because they are in serious need and temporarily closed,'" Krommydas told Patch.

The Surge Protector, an "easy-drinking session IPA," combines a bag of malt barley from each of the eight breweries and four different varieties of hops, which they expect will produce around 30 barrels of suds. The 5% ABV benefit brew will be available on tap and in bottles at local LI bars by early next year, though at this point specific locations aren't available. Follow @sandyreliefbeer and @krommydas for a release date and to find how you can get your drink on for a good cause!
