Internationally-celebrated as the cradle of digital culture, San Jose is the nation's 12th largest city and its role as an arts catalyst is evolving into national notoriety, fronted by the efforts of San Jose Jazz. San Jose is leading an impressive recovery from the pandemic, earning a reputation as the rare SF Bay Area city with empowering civic leadership successfully tackling many of today's biggest challenges while prioritizing the arts. SJZ Summer Fest exemplifies how San Jose knows the way to a sustainable future infused with public art for the people. And what could be better than a summer weekend in the sun filled with live music by Herbie Hancock, Angélique Kidjo, Incognito, Maze Honoring Frankie Beverly, Cory Henry, The Family Stone, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Shamar Allen, Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, New Breed Brass Band, John Santos Sextet, Jahari Stampley Trio, and so many others!

"San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2024 is gearing up to be an incredible time for SF Bay Area music fans," says San Jose Jazz's Executive Director Brendan Rawson. "While people are still getting back on their feet after several years of setbacks with rising inflation and a myriad of other challenges, we've closely looked at how we can provide an unrivaled experience at a price point that best meets our community. This year, we have an additional price tier that helps support attendees who purchase tickets early, and our 3-Day ticket packages are amongst the best value for any festival out there. We're greatly looking forward to Summer Fest exhibiting the breadth of the jazz tradition as it moves into the future, and providing an inclusive atmosphere where all people are celebrated."

Artistic Director Bruce Labadie, one of the event's founders, programs the artists for SJZ Summer Fest with the help of locally based co-curators.

Labadie comments, "It's been a dream of ours to present the acclaimed jazz visionary Herbie Hancock, and we couldn't be more excited to see him and his all-star band headlining on Saturday night on the Main Stage. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly's performance will be a historic moment with longtime SJZ Summer Fest performer and SJZ Board Member Tony Lindsay taking the reins of Maze Honoring Frankie Beverly. Many fantastic live performers will take the Summer Fest stage like Angélique Kidjo, Cory Henry, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, The Family Stone, Lisa Fischer, and others. We have unbelievable emerging talent like piano prodigy Jahari Stampley -- who won first place in the 2023 Herbie Hancock Institute International Competition. With the global music community always on our minds, we are presenting artists from Africa, Korea, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, and the United Kingdom."

Ensuring SJZ Summer Fest's accessibility to the widest audience possible, San Jose Jazz has lowered 3-Day Pass prices on most access levels this year. The region's best entertainment value accompanies a major upgrade of Plaza de César Chávez, which unveils a complete refresh of the park this month including a re-sodding of the green spaces (with special events in mind), planting colorful mixes of flowers, and the addition of Adirondack chairs, corn hole, ping pong tables, and large orange California poppy-style umbrellas. The park is the center of fun at SJZ Summer Fest 2024 with live concerts throughout Plaza de César Chavez alongside artisanal vendors offering delicious foods and beverages, and creative crafts.

Activating the city scene, SJZ Summer Fest's profusion of music transforms a major metropolitan downtown into a huge street party closer to NOLA Jazz Fest and Detroit Jazz Festival than to anything else on tap in the SF Bay Area. It's a highlight of the Bay Area's summer season, and a not-to-be-missed celebration.

Highlights of Newly Confirmed Artists @ San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2024

Herbie Hancock

Now in the seventh decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Still at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music, he has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960s. Throughout his explorations, Hancock has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career that has earned him 14 Grammy Awards, including the 2008 Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters -- only the second time that a jazz album has won the coveted award -- he continues to amaze audiences across the globe.

Hancock first came into prominence as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet during the 1960s and through his early solo recordings for Blue Note Records. His work in the '70s -- including influential albums such as Headhunters and Mwandishi -- combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. The hit single "Rockit" and album Future Shock in the '80s marked Hancock's foray into electronic dance sounds. Today, Hancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011, Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and in December 2013, he received a Kennedy Center Honor. He is currently in the studio at work on a new album.

Angélique Kidjo

Angélique Kidjo hails from the West African nation of Benin. Her striking voice, stage presence and fluency in multiple cultures and languages have won respect from her peers and expanded her following across national borders. TIME Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2021. Forbes Magazine ranked her as the first woman in its list of the "Most Powerful Celebrities" in Africa.

With 16 albums to her name, Kidjo has not only explored the African diaspora in her music, but has offered a refreshing take on the Talking Heads album, Remain In Light, and reflected on celebrated salsa singer Celia Cruz. Kidjo's albums, Djin Djin and Sings with the Orchestre Philharmonique Du Luxembourg, have won world music GRAMMY Awards, and her album, Oyo, was nominated for the same award in 2011. Her latest album, Mother Nature, won a "Best Global Music" GRAMMY.

Kidjo's numerous collaborators have included Bono, John Legend, Jimmy Buffett, Peter Gabriel, Alicia Keys, Carlos Santana, Josh Groban, Philip Glass, Sting and Ziggy Marley. Kidjo also travels the world advocating for children in her capacity as a UNICEF and OXFAM goodwill ambassador. She has created her own charitable foundation, Batonga, that supports the education of young girls in Africa, and she published her first book, a memoir titled Spirit Rising: My Life, My Music, in 2014.

Incognito

For more than four decades, Incognito -- the British band co-founded and still led by singer, guitarist, composer and producer Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick -- has explored the connections between jazz, funk and soul. Their vibrant, joyous live shows and innovative recordings have brought them a worldwide audience. Incognito released their debut album, Jazz Funk, in 1981 and made an immediate impact with their powerful instrumental sound. They soon expanded their focus, utilizing sequencers and samplers in the late '80s, which were evident by their 1991 album, Inside Life. An update of Stevie Wonders "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" was a standout on their Tribes, Vibes + Scribes album, which blew up on radio and sold almost a million copies worldwide.

The albums that followed "Tribes" cemented Incognito's place among the in-demand bands on the international stage, particularly 1993's Positivity, 1995's 100° and Rising and 1999's No Time Like the Future. Their 19th album, Into You, was released in 2023. Today, Bluey carries on the legacy of Incognito -- which features an ever-revolving lineup in order to keep things fresh -- with both new recordings and powerful, energetic live shows. They give him a chance to get close to his audience. "It's not about playing the tune just to get applause," he says. "It's about communicating, making sure people get it. It's a wonderful time for music."

Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra

Since its founding in 2007, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra have grown into one of the premier large ensembles in the world, releasing three critically acclaimed albums and touring internationally. They leap between swing, Latin, and New Orleans with ease and style, educating youth and elevating New Orleans culture with their music. The Uptown Jazz Orchestra was formed by NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award-winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis in 2007 for the purpose of keeping important jazz music traditions alive: riff-playing, spontaneous group improvisations and collective New Orleans instrumental polyphony. At the time, Marsalis realized that the New Orleans music community was lacking the infusion of young homegrown talent outside of the great brass band tradition, and chose to form an orchestra that could present traditional, classic and modern compositions with authenticity.

In 2008, Marsalis founded the educational program, "Swinging with the Cool School" (a soft introduction to jazz for hip tots and adults), which was used as an experimental form of music therapy at New Orleans Children Hospital. The Cool School has since expanded to introduce live instrumental jazz to students around the country, with the intent of helping young people develop a relationship with music that has gradually disappeared from mainstream radio and media at large. Since 2021, UJO has produced the annual Jazz at Congo Square Festival (JACS) to celebrate New Orleans culture by presenting live performances of musicians, poets, dancers, and Black Masking Indians to local and visiting audiences. JACS Festival also features local food, arts & craft vendors. Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra plan to continue using the great legacy of American music to engage and inspire the younger generations for many years to come.

Las Cafeteras

Las Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed many genres and borders along the way. Their eclectic sound and high-energy performances have taken them around the world playing shows at Bonnaroo, the Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD, Montreal Jazz Festival and beyond. Born and raised in East LA, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern-day troubadours. They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to "build a world where many worlds fit." From Afro-Mexican to Americana, soul to son jarocho, and roots to rock and hip-hop, Las Cafeteras take folk music into the future.

Las Cafeteras honors the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the 8-string jarana, 4-string requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform). They sing in five distinct languages: English, Spanish, Spanglish, love and justice. The band believes everyone understands at least one of those languages. They've performed with Mexican icons like Café Tacuba, Natalia Lafourcade and Lila Downs; the Gypsy Kings; Colombian superstar Juanes; hip-hop artist and cultural phenomenon Common; and Los Angeles legends Ozomatli, Los Lobos and the LA Phil.

Their long-awaited third album, A Night in Nepantla, is due out on May 10, 2024. "Nepantla" is an ancient Central American word used in Chicano communities to represent a concept of "in-between-ness." Frontman and singer Hector Flores, says, "As a band, we deeply resonate with the land of 'Nepantla' and feel that we live in the middle of multiple worlds, sounds and identities, and this album brings people together to sonically join us in our joy, grief, struggle, and liberation in Nepantla."

Kiefer

Kiefer's signature sound is something you can't forget; characterized by hard-hitting beats, complex jazz voicings and sentimental melodies. A standout at Stones Throw Records, he bridges jazz and hip-hop with style and virtuosity, creating modern suites of infectious grooves. Kiefer grew up in San Diego, California, immersed in jazz by his father at a young age, and later experimented with hip-hop-inspired beats in high school. He got his education in beats while studying jazz piano at UCLA and collaborating with other artists in the scene.

His debut, Kickinit Alone, was released on Leaving Records in 2017. Soon after, Kiefer signed to Stones Throw Records and released two LPs: 2018's Happysad and 2021's When There's Love Around. His new full-length record, titled It's Ok, B U, dropped in September 2023. Outside of his solo work, Kiefer has recorded with artists such as Drake, Kaytranada, S.I.R., and Terrace Martin, and produced for Anderson .Paak on his Grammy Award winning record, Ventura. In addition, he is an active educator, having mentored keyboardist Telemakus and recently released 15 Exercises on his website. Kiefer at his core is both emotional and an optimist, which is why his songs resonate with a wide spectrum of emotions. His ethos is about feeling encouraged, empowered and full of gratitude, reminding listeners through his music, "this is a beautiful life."

Terrence Brewer & Mason Razavi: The Magic of Monk

Local favorites Mason Razavi and Terrence Brewer pay homage to the great pianist Thelonious Monk, known for his influential style of dissonant voicings and off-beat rhythm. They are joined by first-call musicians Gary Brown and Sylvia Cuenca. Guitarist Mason Razavi has been a mainstay on the SF Bay Area jazz scene for over a decade. His ambitious original compositions have been warmly received, and he's performed with some of the West Coast's great musicians, including Anton Schwartz, Mimi Fox, John Stowell, Aaron Lington, Hristo Vitchev, Lorca Hart and many others. He's also been a performer and clinician at the NAMM show and the Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival.

Multiple award-winning guitarist Terrence Brewer is a first-call and in-demand bandleader, record producer, concert performer and studio musician. He's also one of the SF Bay area's foremost and sought after music educators. Brewer has produced and released 11 nationally acclaimed albums on his own record label, Strong Brew Music.

In the past 20 years, bassist Gary Brown has toured extensively in the United States, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East where he has recorded and shared the stage with Pharaoh Sanders, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, George Duke, Roy Ayres, Lyle Mays and many more. 2022 Jazz Aid Fund artist Sylvia Cuenca is an active drummer on the New York and SF Bay Area jazz scenes who contributes outstanding performances in a variety of settings. She has had the honor of sharing the bandstand with saxophone legend Joe Henderson for 4 years and trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years.

Andre Thierry Accordion Soul

Although born and raised in Richmond, California, Andre's French-Kreole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana. He embarked on a path with specific knowledge and extraordinary talents from a very young age. True to his culture and love of music, he has crafted a career well beyond his years as an artist. Andre grew up experiencing the French Kreole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish, St. Mark's Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled to California to play at these dances. The exposure allowed him to develop his love for traditional French Kreole music while regularly playing with visiting bands, such as the late John Delafose and many local Zydeco and Cajun bands.

Now in his 30's, he had already been deemed a legend. The Washington Post called Andre, "A master at pumping out fast, funky rhythms on an instrument not usually associated with earthy syncopation. A versatile student of the music, Thierry can't be lumped into Zydeco's old-school R&B-influenced camp or its nouveau, rap-inspired one: He and his band lay down both soulful, traditional slow-dances and bottom-end-booming kinetic groovers." Andre Thierry's music creations are intoxicating and timeless.

Enjoy the unfolding of this charismatic artist as he vibrates Accordion Soul, raising the frequency with stimulating beats, attracting any music lover to the dance floor!
