Outside of beer and photography, my favorite activity is hiking, and better yet, traveling to go hiking. Mrs. BeerBuzz and I log hundreds of hiking-miles on each trip and we’ve been doing that for a few decades now.  With that in mind, we’ve had an opportunity to try out some of the best hiking and travel gear available. From shoes to outerwear we’ve tried them all, so I think we have a pretty solid idea of what works and what doesn’t…and today I have an item that not only works, but works really well.

I’m talking about the Coalatree Trailhead Pants and I’m exciting to get a chance to test-drive them on the trail.  Back in August, I noticed the Coalatree brand on social media, and I remember thinking that they had a unique set of features in their Trailhead Pants that seem like they’d really work well….so naturally I was excited to get a chance to try out these pants.

If you’re not familiar with their brand, here’s a little history from Coalatree: “Coalatree started out as a self-sustaining organic farm in Colorado. The farm focused around a "reap what you sow" mentality, and integrated sustainable practices with quality products. Wanting to create our own workwear, we first launched a line of clothing in 2010, and have continued on to the outdoor industry, all while maintaining our roots in sustainably produced goods. Coalatree designs eco-minded gear and apparel for the adventurer in everyone, from athletes and photographers to your average city folks and weekend warriors. It’s our passion to bring elements of the outdoors and the city life together. Whether you’re summiting the tallest peaks or lounging around town with friends, our products are practical, stylish, and functional. Being ready for anything is what we’re all about. To us, a MTN2CTY lifestyle is one of adventure, freedom, and ease. We wake up early to catch sunrise on a ridge before seamlessly transitioning into the office. We’re out on the town on a Friday night with friends then up for dawn patrol on powder days. To Greet the Outdoors is to be ready to pack our bags, hit the road, run the trails, and explore.”

Their Trailhead pants feature:

  • 100% Durable Ripstop Nylon
  • Water Resistant & Stain Proof
  • Breathable for All Climates
  • Stink-Proof Fabric - Wear More Wash Less
  • Deep Pockets
  • 360 ° 4-Way Stretch
  • Packable - Stash into Front Pocket
  • Antimicrobial
  • 88% Bluesign® Approved Nylon 12% Spandex

Naturally I can’t wait to try them out, so with that in mind, we took them on a 7-mile hike at one of our local (and challenging) waterfall trails. This will give me an opportunity to try the Trailhead pants in a variety of conditions.

The Trailhead pants have a conformable fit that makes them really easy to put on and really comfy once they’re on. The pants feature an elastic waistband with a sturdy cinching cord similar to athletic pants but without a fly opening. The fabric is really stretchy and comfortable and the leg openings even have their own cinching cords as well. This feature alone makes the pants really versatile in the northeast where ticks are a significant challenge. With these leg cords, you can tighten the leg openings making it difficult for ticks to get in…and while it’s winter here at home, the leg ties also allow you to shorten the legs on hot summer hikes.

The Trailhead pants feature two front pockets (one that you can use to stash the pants into in your backpack), a rear pocket with covering flap and a rear pocket with a covering flap and Velcro closure. They also have some great details with a “Coalatree” patch on the front pocket and a “MTN2CTY” patch on the rear pocket.

My pants were a Men’s Medium Regular fit and they were pretty spot on for my 32-inch waist and 30-inch length. The legs are tapered which makes them great for mountain biking, hiking, scrambling and even climbing.  My pants were also Grey which not only looked great, but in summer it will make it even easier to spot ticks before they attach.Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights The Coalatree Trailhead Pants (Review)

The Coalatree Trailhead Pants fabric is ripstop nylon with 360-degree 4-way stretch so they are really comfortable but also really durable. My pants were stretchy enough for hiking but really durable when we encountered some rock scrambling and thorn bushes. The material is light weight and versatile enough to wear for your workouts or even working around the house or yard. The fabric is breathable and water resistant enough to take care of the waterfall spray, and Coalatree also says that the fabric is stain proof, antimicrobial and even stink-proof for longer camping adventures.

At just over 12-ounces, the Trailhead pants are really lightweight and not only make for a perfect pair of backpacking pants, but also a great lightweight pair of pants to use as campsite pants for lounging around camp or even sleeping.

Overall I’d say the Coalatree Trailhead Pants check a lot of boxes when it comes to hiking and adventure pants, and also a lot of boxes when it comes to just plain old comfortable pants for wearing around the house or even grocery shopping. The word I keep coming back to when describing the Trailhead pants is “versatile.” The pants have no bad habits, no pinch points, no abrasive fabric and nothing to complain about. The only complaint I may have is that after hiking, I didn’t want to take them off. These hiking, cycling, walking, lounging, shopping, grocery shopping, climbing, backpacking, running, working out and even sleeping pants are really comfortable and really versatile.
