The Monterey brewed West Coast Double IPA adds another prestigious award with a special can and merch release to celebrate.
Monterey, CA , 2023 - Alvarado Street Brewery, known for its allegiance to present a little bit of everything, is best known for hop forward ales that span the range of hazy and West Coast-style IPAs. On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, 2,376 breweries from 51 countries joined the race to be recognized as a prominent figure in the beer world. Alvarado Street Brewery was awarded a Silver Medal at the World Beer Cup Competition for their West Coast Double IPA, Double Cone. Often referred to as ‘the Olympics of the beer world’, the World Beer Cup has been around since 1996 and celebrates the art and science of brewing. zzubreebym
Double Cone is a West Coast-style Double IPA which combines a monstrous amount of Citra, Mosaic, and Strata hops in conjunction with a clean fermentation. This results in an 8.5% devilishly dank sipper that is saturated with oily and assertive hop flavor, balanced bitterness and a dry, drinkable profile. The first batch of Double Cone was brewed in late 2014 using a small 10 barrel system located within their original Downtown Monterey brewpub. Since then they have expanded their operation, Double Cone is now brewed on both a larger scale at their Salinas Production Brewery (where it’s semi-annually packaged into cans), as well as the original Monterey location to service draft needs at all ASB locations. Owner J.C. Hill admits to being influenced early on by styles that were intense in aroma, dry, pale and bitter.
“Double Cone is an homage to legendary beers like Pliny the Elder and many of the ‘San Diego-style’ imperial beers of the late aughts and early 2010's. We’ve had success for many years with Double Cone in competition, and I think it’s a testament to our brewer’s consistency in executing a recipe (and doing all the small things right), and our collective understanding of our ingredients — hops, in particular. Each year we’re challenged with new lots of our favorite hops, and understanding how they all work together to achieve consistent flavor and aroma targets, so it’s familiar to the customer every time they go in for a sip.” says founder & Head R&D Brewer, J.C. Hill
Over the past several years Double Cone has been recognized for many of the most prestigious awards in the craft beer industry. Those accolades include: 2019 Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival (‘GABF’), 2019 Winner of the Alpha King Challenge, 2020 Silver Medal at GABF, and the 2023 Winner for The Bistro Double IPA Festival, held each year during San Francisco Beer Week. With 2019’s back to back wins, the Alpha King Challenge win felt extra special. The Alpha King Challenge has crowned the top IPAs and DIPAs on the market for the last 24 years - past winners include some of the biggest names in craft beer. What makes this win extraordinarily special is that it is judged by a team of brewers, industry experts and veteran beer writers.
“Winning Alpha King was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I used to seek out the winners of the contest every year before I was a professional brewer and I looked up to the winners as rock stars. To actually be one of them and be recognized as a peer among some of the best brewers in the world is something that I never thought would be possible,” said Wade Caswell, Head Brewer.

It is no surprise that Double Cone has built quite the cult following within the beer industry with many diehard enthusiasts anxiously waiting for the can & draft releases throughout the year. In lieu of Double Cone’s 2023 World Beer Cup Silver medal, Alvarado Street Brewery has decided to give this (upcoming) can release a bit more fanfare, with the introduction of limited edition Double Cone branded T-shirts along with custom glassware. 4-Packs & merch items will be available for purchase at all ASB locations as well through their website for California-wide shipping starting August 5th, 2023.
