From Indeed Brewing:
MINNEAPOLIS, MN , NOVEMBER 13, 2019: While employees in Minneapolis and Milwaukee toast to their win abroad, Indeed Brewing Company owner Tom Whisenand has accepted a Gold Medal for the team today at the prestigious European Beer Star 2019 competition in Nuremberg, Germany. Awarded for Indeed’s Lavender Sunflower Honey and Dates Ale in the Herb and Spice Beer category, this is the third medal in three years for the brewery, following wins for Mexican Honey Imperial Lager in 2017 and B-Side Pils in 2018.
Of the win, Whisenand says, “To earn a Gold medal at this competition is an absolute honor for our brewery, and to win with this beer, with its colorful history and unique flavor profile, is especially exciting and something we won’t soon forget.”
This is the 16th year of the 2019 European Beer Star, where 2,483 beers from 47 countries across all continents went head to head in one of the most challenging beer competitions in the world. A 145-member judges panel of master brewers, beer sommeliers and established beer connoisseurs from 28 countries took part in a two-day blind tasting in early October to determine the winners of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for 67 different beer styles. The panel hands out awards for authentic, distinctive beers of an impressive taste and quality that are true to style in the best way possible.
Lavender Sunflower Honey and Dates, better known as “LSD” to its long-time fans, is a kaleidoscopic spiral of floral aromas dancing atop rich notes of fruit and honey, described by critics as “walking through a meadow of wildflowers after a fresh spring rain,” and “eminently drinkable.” Alongside Day Tripper Pale Ale, it’s the brewery’s most awarded offering, with medals from the Brussels Beer Challenge, the National Honey Board, and several years of mentions from the Growler Kind of a Big Deal Awards. Yet in spite of its critical accolades, the herbal ale is perhaps best known for its controversial name change enforced by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in 2016.
To commemorate its Gold Medal win, the brewery will be releasing limited-edition 6-packs of Lavender Sunflower Honey and Dates in 12 oz cans to local markets, and celebrating all week long in its Minneapolis taproom with a special flight of all three European Beer Star medal-winners, including B-Side Pils and Mexican Honey Imperial Lager.
