Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Ommegang 2019 Hopstate IPA (Review)

Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Ommegang 2019 Hopstate IPAI’ll admit up front that it still feels a bit odd to be sampling not only an IPA coming from Brewery Ommegang, but also a can.  I should also admit that it took me about 10-seconds to get beyond that shock and move on to the excitement of sampling a canned IPA from Ommegang.
Today we’ll be sampling Brewery Ommegang 2019 Hopstate IPA, and while this isn’t the first release of Hopstate, it is the first year I’ve had an opportunity to try the 16oz cans first launched in 2018.  This beer is brewed exclusively with New York State hops and New York-sourced barley malt and it will be released as part of the Ommegang Farmhouse Series (“a line of beers that draws inspiration from the brewery’s home on the site of a historic 140-acre hop farm.”)
The beer is brewed with Chinook, Michigan Copper, Cascade, and Triple Pearl hops as well as NY 2-row malt and carasteam malt (from 1886 Malt House in Fulton, NY).  I should also mention that the 2019 16oz can looks really good…so off we go.Brewery Ommegang’s 2019 Hopstate IPA Celebrates New York Hop Farmers & Maltsters
Hopstate IPA pours a bright golden-orange color with just a touch of haze to the beer.  The aromas are loaded with grapefruit, citrus, tropical fruits and a touch of floral hop presence.  The flavors shift from grapefruit and passion fruit to a really prominent orange-citrus hop bite (this is a good thing).  This beer hits 45 IBU but it won’t bowl you over with hop bitterness or resinous flavors.  In the end, the citrus remains prominent as it ends with a touch of sweetness and the continued tangerine orange presence.  Overall I found the mouthfeel and flavors make Hopstate IPA a really drinkable and satisfying IPA and I’m really glad Ommegang will be expanding distribution to include PA.
Ommegang 2019 Hopstate IPA will be available beginning June 28th in 16oz canned 4-packs and on draft in NY state and across Ommegang’s east-coast distribution footprint.  The beer hits 7.4%-AbV and I think the 16oz can is the perfect package for this IPA.  Get out there and try 2019 Hopstate IPA for yourself, and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
