From Saint Arnold:
Weedwacker takes top honors at most prestigious beer competition in the world
HOUSTON, May 4, 2018 - Saint Arnold Brewing Co. ( www.saintarnold.com) Weedwacker beer won gold in the German Style Wheat Ale category at the World Beer Cup (WBC), the most prestigious beer competition in the world. This is the first WBC award for this brew, and 12th overall WBC award for the brewery, continuing Texas' oldest craft brewery's status as the most awarded brewery in the South.
"Weedwacker is having an incredible year," said Brock Wagner, Owner and Founder of Saint Arnold. "Earning the gold medal in this category was especially rewarding knowing it was up against beers from respected German breweries with centuries of brewing tradition."
Weedwacker is a Bavarian hefeweizen, sort of. The recipe uses the same malt and hops as Fancy Lawnmower beer but is fermented with Bavarian hefeweizen yeast instead of kölsch yeast. It is light and refreshing but has a spicy clove note and some banana esters that come from the yeast.
Weedwacker also won bronze in the German Style Wheat Ale category at the most recent Great American Beer Festival, and the brewery is the current Mid-Size Brewing Company of the Year.
The WBC results are announced by the Brewers Association, the trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft breweries, during the annual Craft Brewers conference. This was the largest competition since the start of the awards in 1996, with 2,215 participating breweries from all over the world submitting over 8,000 beers.
