CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE BREWING COMPANY CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF BEERS NOVEMBER 17TH-19TH

Center of the Universe Brewing Company Is Throwing a 3 Day Bash to Celebrate 5 Years of Craft Beer in Ashland

Ashland, Virginia November 6, 2017 Center of the Universe Brewing Company is celebrating 5 years of beers in Ashland with a whole weekend of fun. They’ll be celebrating by bringing back some old favorites as well as showcasing new experiments straight from Origin Beer Lab. Each day they’ll be new beers on tap to try with live music on Friday, and food trucks each day.

“After 5 years we are still passionate about making great beer. We are proud to be a part of the amazing beer community here in RVA.” - Phil Ray, Co-founder Center of the Universe Brewing Company

Day 1: Friday, November 17th

Day one of COTU’s anniversary celebration begins with an annual tradition: The return of The Richard, an imperial IPA hopped up to the max. This "mistake brew" was the first brew they ever had on their system. The mistake? Boiling off 1/3 of the water while hopping it like a full batch. The result is an ultra smooth, intensely aromatic West Coast meets East Coast IPA. It makes its return each year to kick off the anniversary celebrations.

The Tender Band will also be returning to the COTU stage on Friday. This local favorite opened up the brewery back in 2012 and has been coming back ever since.

Day 2: Saturday, November 18th

On Saturday COTU will be tapping some old favorites and showcasing some new beers that have graduated from Origin Beer Lab. Here’s the line-up:

Oaky Pokey - an old favorite made with their flagship IPA, Pocahoptas. This beer is aged on white oak and delivers a creamy, tropical, and oaky flavor and aroma.

Black Dawn - a one-off seasonal from 2016. This 7.5% black IPA is heavily hopped with Amarillo, Centennial, and Chinook which gives it delicious orange and piney kick!

NEW: Bee Generous Honey Ale - a graduate of Origin Beer Lab that was developed by Ashley Ray. This beer is brewed with 40 gallons of orange blossom honey, which is then complimented by a generous portion of honey malt and 2-row barley. The result is a refreshing, brite, and delicious brew that clocks in at 6.2% ABV.

NEW: Just Plum Sour - a kettle soured Belgian Dark Strong that has been aged on plum puree.  The 6.5% beer starts with an in-your-face tartness that leads to a complex array of dark fruits, raisin, and chocolate finish. This is a truly unique and experimental ale where everything just worked out. It will not last long!

There will also be a vintage bottle sale starting on Saturday. COTU will be releasing 750ml bombers that have beer stored away. The list of cellared bottles includes:

  • 2014 Shut Up

  • 2015 Shut Up

  • 2015 Orange is the New Stout

  • 2016 Shut Up

  • 2016 Travesty

  • 2016 IV

  • 2016 Dos Duderinos

  • 2016 Dos Duderinos Wine Barrel Aged

  • 2016 Dos Duderinos Bourbon Barrel Aged

  • 2016 Dos Duderinos w/Coffee and Bourbon

  • 2016 Dos Duderino w/Coconut and Cocao Nib

“It has been a wild ride so far in our first 5 years with all the changes at the brewery and the brew scene in central Virginia as a whole.  I’m excited to bring back some old memories with the limited edition retired seasonals this weekend and I cannot wait to see what the next 5 years bring!” - Chris Ray, Co-founder Center of the Universe Brewing Company

Day 3: Sunday, November 19th

Day 3 is a full on celebration of the COTU Satellites, Center of the Universe Brewing’s biggest supporters.

The Satellites are a group of like minded beer enthusiasts who use Center of the Universe Brewing as their hub. What started as a COTU Fan Club has blossomed into a community that supports each other all while sharing a COTU brew.

When you sign-up to be a COTU Satellite, you earn points for things like going to the brewery, attending events, and recruiting new Satellites. Those points can be redeemed for a number of swag items and prices. One BIG item is a chance to brew your own beer at Origin Beer Lab, COTU’s sister brewery, with co-founder Phil Ray.

There have been 5 Satellites in 2017 who have done so. And, this Sunday, COTU will be releasing the beers they brewed.

  • Tedd’s American Rye Ale

  • Nathan’s Guava IPA

  • Bridgette’s Crazy Bet Imperial Red (Bridgette chose to bring back an old seasonal from 2013)

  • Rob’s Verbunden Dunkelheit

BEER, BINGO, and BLOODIES will also be in full swing on Sunday. Grab a beer, get yourself a bingo card, and enjoy some intense BINGO action every hour on the hour for a chance to win prizes.
