Mark your calendars…this from Upland Brewing:
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA—Upland Brewing Co. announces their final sour beer lottery of 2017, opening October 4 through October 11, with reservations for winners beginning October 12 through the 19th. The lineup will include Kiwi, Blueberry, and Oak Brux. Secret Barrel Society members will also have two exclusive beers to reserve, Serene and Ponche. Fans can get a sneak peek of the beers, plus a couple more small batch brews, at Sour & Devour, a five-course pairing dinner on October 6 at Upland’s Wood Shop Sour Ale Brewery.
“We’re excited to be ending our 2017 sour lotteries with three exceptional beers and offer our Secret Barrel Society members a couple unique sours that reflect the creativity of our crew. After weeks of processing the various fruits, like kiwi and guava, to have our followers finally able to try these brews is what it’s all about,” said Dusty Howe, Upland’s Sours Brand Manager.
Kiwi is one of Upland’s most sought after sours, especially for those looking for highly acidic beers with intense tartness. Kiwi is a labor of love for the Wood Shop crew and any other staff members willing to process the 2700 lb of fresh kiwi that come in. Each kiwi is peeled and processed by hand over several weeks and then aged for three months on a blonde base beer. Hazy and golden in appearance, Kiwi has zesty amounts of carbonation and fresh fruit and tropical aromas meld with floral and wine-like notes.
Fruity esters are still present in the lottery ale, Oak Brux. This beer is fermented with 100% brettanomyces bruxellensis yeast and aged for eight months in barrels made from fresh French oak heads and medium long toast American oak staves. The oakiness produces vanilla notes and a pleasant funk character.
Blueberry is another whole-fruited sour using a traditional brewing process. Upland’s blonde base beer, Basis, ferments for six to eight months before whole blueberries are added to age for another three. Fans can expect an intense blueberry fruit character with floral and dark fruit aromas. The final blend is bottle conditioned, creating a spritzy mouthfeel and fine carbonation.
The lottery opens October 4 and closes October 11, with winners able to pick up their reserved sours beginning November 1 through 15. The link to enter can be found at uplandsours.com on October 4. For more information about Sour & Devour, visit their website.
