From Sly Fox:
Pottstown, PA—February 2, 2017—Trail Angels are unknown hikers or people that live along a trail that leave help for weary thru-hikers in the form of food, water or gear. According to seasoned thru-hikers, Trail Angels' "gifts" appear when you least expect them and they're very much needed.
You can call Sly Fox Brewing Company trail angels, in a way, when they released a beer and helped support a beloved local trail.
Part wild, part paved, the Schuylkill River Trail or SRT, when complete, will wind its way along the banks of the Schuylkill River from Pottsville, Pennsylvania into the city of Philadelphia. That's a lot of trail to maintain.
The Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area (SRHA) has been an advocate and caretaker of parts of the Schuylkill River Trail, a projected 130-mile multi-use stretch that is part of the East Coast Greenway, since it opened for public use. SRHA depends on individuals, organizations and companies to support their efforts.
This year Sly Fox Brewing Company is being recognized by SRHA for supporting the Schuylkill River Trail annually through clean-ups, activities, fundraising and… beer!
On March 18, SRHA hosts their annual dinner, An Evening for the Schuylkill River, and will present Sly Fox Brewing Company with a Schuylkill River Legacy Award.
Two years ago Sly Fox released SRT Ale, a lower-alcohol hop forward seasonal beer as a tribute to the Schuylkill River Trail. The creative product release was chronicled by two brewery representatives who traveled the entire trail on foot and using kayaks, bicycles and horses. Along the way they delivered the new beer to pre-planned party stops, and organized a series of group trail clean-ups. The successful event led to the SRT Spree, an annual SRT party that celebrates the trail and the Earth Day release of SRT Ale.
Additionally, a portion of the sales of all SRT Ale are donated to SRHA. Since SRT Ale was first released almost $9,000 has been donated to the organization to be used for trail maintenance, improvement and advocacy.
"The Sly Fox partnership bolsters our efforts to encourage recreation, build and improve the SRT and engage new audiences in our events," said Tim Fenchel, SRHA Interim Executive Director. "We are proud to recognize Sly Fox for their meaningful contribution."
Past winners of the Schuylkill River Legacy Award include Exelon Corporation management and DCNR Secretary Cindy Dunn.
"We want to continue to recognize our supporters annually," adds Fenchel, "because we simply could not successfully build the trail, restore the river or promote environmental stewardship without that support."
Available April through September, Sly Fox Brewing Company's low ABV SRT Ale is popular with trail users and outdoor athletes.
