Sometimes you have to take a risk and try something new. Sometimes you have to stretch your boundaries and push the envelope. The brewers of today’s beer did just that back in 1907, so I thought it was a great beer to push the palate boundaries of the Friday BeerBuzz crew. Back in 1907, Mathilde Schneider brought to market the first strong wheat beer. This was a beer that pushed the boundaries of beer fermentation. Schneider brewery was the first brewery to create what we now know as a Weizenbock. Bock beers even today are traditionally Lagers, and most lager yeasts impart very little flavor into the beer. Georg & Mathilde Schneider pioneered the use of top-fermenting Ale yeast with Aventinus, to not only increase the strength for the beer, but more importantly to impart some amazing flavors into the brew….clearly pushing some traditional boundaries.
If you haven’t guessed yet, today’s beer was
Schneider Weisse Aventinus Weizenbock, a perfect beer to stretch the boundaries of beer lovers and a perfect beer to expose our guest to. Now I’ll admit I knew in advance that Mayor Lou Barletta likes Hofbrau Original (Helles Lager), but the Friday BeerBuzz is all about trying something new and trying something you may like even better….so Aventinus was perfect.
This is a beer style every new or existing craft beer lover should try. It is readily available in NEPA, it ages well, it’s affordable and it’s simply a great beer and classic beer style. Try Aventinus for yourself and share it with your friends…you’ll be surprised how great this beer is.
A really fun show and a classic beer!…
Thanks
to Lou, John, Nancy, Joe & Bosco (GREAT music once again Bosco!) for yet another fun Friday.
The Friday Beerbuzz…bringing good beers and good people together.

That was a fun show! Thanks to Congressman-elect Lou Barletta for doing The Friday BeerBuzz with us on WILK!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure what to expect from Aventinus Weizenbock but I liked it A LOT! Just a tasty beer and at 8.2% one you should make no plans for that include anything except the word "recliner"! lol
Did it again Bill! Thank you!
And thanks for the birthday gift!
John

Thanks John...as always it was a lot of fun and I'm glad everyone enjoyed the Aventinus. Have a happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteGreat show guys. I may not agree with the mayors politics but his beers are ok with me. I alreay love Aventinus, but you made me want to try it again.
ReplyDeleteJJ
Brilliant! It was nice to meet you all alst week. Thanks for taking the time to chat.
ReplyDeleteAmy
How much and where can I get Aventinus?
ReplyDeleteAventinus comes in 500ml bottles and it is a steal at $4.99 from Krugels.
ReplyDeleteI'll ask for Mayor Barletta. Where can I get Aventinus in Hazleton?
ReplyDeleteMartin
Try the Beer Stop Martin.
ReplyDeleteAnother great beer choice for sure and we love Senaps pizza. Nice show buzzers and thanks to the mayor for coming up.
ReplyDeleteJT Stevens
I was worried the mayor might make the buzz all political but it worked out well. Good show. WILK has a winner here. There must have been 200 people at Georgetown Deli last week for the show. We ended up waiting in traffic and parking a mile away but it was worth it. To try out Gothika and get to say hi was fantastic. And you made my week by putting me on the famous beer cam. Thansk for another great beer choice Bill.

Beer text club? Really?
ReplyDeleteYes Anon. Text "beer" to 99404 to join the Friday BeerBuzz text club. We'll be texting out details of our beer of the week BEFORE the show and a few other tidbits as well. Remember your standard text messaging rates apply, but we'll make it worthwhile ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads-up. I just joined the beer texting club. I Can't wait for my first text.
ReplyDeleteSteve
I'm not a dark beer drinker and especially not dark wheat beers, but you guys haven't let me down yet. I'll give Aventinus a shot. Based on your description, I think I may like it.
ReplyDeleteBrad
Give it a try Brad. This is a great beer and it's not a traditional bock by any means.
ReplyDeleteHow dark is this beer?
ReplyDeleteAnon...it's not stout dark colored at all. I'd call it a lighter almost milk-chocolate color.
ReplyDeleteI really like Schneider's original wheat so I'll try this one.
ReplyDeleteRyan.
For those brave souls out there that want more than the 8.2% ABV Aventinus has to offer, be sure to check out Aventinus Eisbock. This is a version of Aventinus where the water is forzen out to reveal more Alchohol....and it's over 12% ABV!
ReplyDeleteGerman ber are alwasy so mild and undistinctive. The normal lagers and wheats just don't do much for me and the Kolsch beers are sort of odd. This one sounds different, and since I plan to hit Krugel's tonight anyway I'll try it out. How wrong can yuo go for $4.99 and 8.2%.
ReplyDeleteRyan W
We'd solve a lot more problems if more politicians were willing to sit down over a beer and talk. Kudos to Lou.
ReplyDeleteLT
Thanks for talking last week. It was nice to meet you John and Nancy at Krugel's. I think I even met Bosco but I definitely met Gothika. You guys were dead on. What a great beer Terry & Mike made. What's next!?
ReplyDeleteMay
Stay tuned May and be sure to join the Friday Beerbuzz Text club (Text "beer" to 99404). Yes Bosco and Joe Thomas were both there also. Thanks for tuning in.
ReplyDeleteGreat pizza and beer show. I love you guys.
ReplyDeleteArney
A+ show and nice to meet you all at Krugels.
ReplyDeleteBob T (Moosic)
I got to be on Beer Cam last week so my life is complete. All kiidding aside it was nice of you to come out on the road and meet us all.
ReplyDeleteGary
Gothika rocked and you guys were really fun last week. It was cool meeting you all and my favorite was Beer Cam.
ReplyDeleteMark
Hey that was my beer question you read! Thank you for answering on the air. I never understood the difference. Thank U
ReplyDeleteShelly
You've done some excellent beers. Some I knew about already and some I learned on the show, and other than the Kolsch you did, I've loved them all. Bottom line is I'll be buying this one today to try it. Thanks buzzers.
ReplyDeleteLarry
Thanks guys. Try this beer. You won't be dissapointed.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I hit Krugels already and we plan to try our Aventinus tonight, and the guy said we weren't the first ones there asking for it. Good job WILK.
ReplyDeleteAstro
Aventinus is a classic dark German beer so I applaud the choice. There are more local Weizenbocks but none are better than Aventinus. I think yuo've had a pretty interesting selection so far and I think it's fun to see what you'll be doing next.
ReplyDeleteEric
Thank you. I really do try to choose beers that will appeal to the new and expert beer lovers. Hopefully we can contune to do that...and yes don't delay. Joe tells me they do sell quite a few of our "beer of the day" choices at Krugels.
ReplyDeleteAventinus is a great choice, and even better on a cold winter night. Atta boy buzz guy.
