Those that know me well, know that as soon as you put the letters “I” “P” and “A” together, I’m on board. Of course the IPA’s even get more interesting to me when it’s one I haven’t sampled from the northwest, and it’s one that will now be much easier to get.
Enter Elysian Savant IPA and you know we’re in for a sampling treat. First brewed in 2012, Elysian Savant IPA was originally part of the Manic IPA Series and originally with a much lower 6.3%-AbV….and of course for those on the east coast, it was much harder to get. But I’m excited to note that Elysian Savant IPA will now return “triumphantly” in 2017 as the latest release in the Manic IPA Series (following Hubris IPA & Breakout IPA). For 2017 this will be a national release across Elysian’s distribution footprint so watch for this beer to hit shelves in your area.
We can’t jump into the tasting without at least mentioning how cool the packaging for Savant IPA is. Who doesn’t love an artistic eyeglass-wearing chimpanzee, and when he’s working on a painting of hop cones, I think we’re all on board.
Elysian Savant IPA pours a bright amber/orange color and if you’re familiar with Nelson Sauvin hops, I don’t need to say more about the aromas. If not, you’ll be hit in the nose (in a nice way) with passion fruit, tropical fruits and citrus…citrus citrus (did I mention citrus). The flavors lead with some grapefruit and follow with tropical fruits, a light malt presence, and some resinous notes in the finish. The hops really take center stage in this beer and as it warmed a bit we found additional grassy & piney flavors that we really liked. At 8%-AbV this one will sneak up on you, so share the 22oz bottle with a friend (or keep it to yourself and enjoy the whole bottle like I did).
Elysian Savant IPA is a very drinkable tropical IPA that I think you’ll really like. It is available now through April in 22oz bottles and on draft in CA, CO, NY, OR and WA. Try Elysian Savant IPA for yourself, and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
