Summit Brewing is celebrating their 30th Anniversary with not one, not two, not even three….but FOUR special 30th Anniversary beers to be released over the course of the year. I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to sample the first release, 30th Anniversary Double IPA and we really enjoyed it….so I’m excited to give you the first review of the 2nd beer in the series….Keller Pils.
Summit 30th Anniversary Keller Pils is brewed to highlight not only the beer itself, but some of the unique ingredients that makeup a great German-style pilsner. The German pilsner malts come from Weyerman Specialty Malting in Bamberg Germany and Sumit was lucky enough to get a special “Barke Heritage Pilsner” malt for this beer.
Up next Summit sourced some Tettnang hops from Minnesota-based brewers supply as well as some Hallertau Melon hops from Germany’s S.S. Steiner. The beer ingredients were rounded out with Wyeast Laboratories private collection Munich lager yeast and the beer was finished with two weeks of cool fermentation and six weeks of cold maturation.
Summit 30th Anniversary Keller Pils pours a really pretty light straw color and the you can’t miss the sweet malt and light citrus aromas. The beer has some really nicely balanced malty and citrusy hop flavors with a dull sweet light honey flavor that really works well. The beer is crisp and finishes clean with a mild citrus bite. All in all this is a really well balanced beer with some classic and unique pislner flavors.
At 5.1%-AbV and 38 IBU this beer is very drinkable and very satisfying. 30th Anniversary Keller Pils is being released this week so it should be hitting shelves very soon on draft, in six-packs and in 12-packs of 12oz cans. The list of kickoff events are here, so get out there and try this unique beer…and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
**And shhhh….here’s a peek an upcoming 30th Anniversary release.
