I always love sampling new beers from Flying Dog. Maybe it’s the fact that I enjoy staring at the gorgeous Ralph Steadman artwork, or more likely it’s just how much I always enjoy the beers….or perhaps it’s simply both.
Today we have an early look at two new specialty releases, and two really different beers: Brewhouse Rarities Berliner Weisse & Heat Series Ancho Lime Paradise Lager.
Knowing what I know about the combination of heat and my palate, it was an easy choice to decide which beer goes first. Berliner Weisse is part of the Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities series and also one of the beers that have made the leap to bottles from that series. This beer was created by Flying Dog cellarman and brewer Michael and you can’t miss the wonderful tartness ( 7 IBU)in the aroma and early flavors. The mouthfeel is clean and crisp and the lemony tartness makes it a really easy drinking beer. This classic Berliner Weisse is kettle soured, it uses Pilsner & Wheat malts and it is balanced nicely with Perle hops. This beer is very sessionable at 4.2%-AbV and the perfect summer brew.
Up next we transitioned from tart and lemony to hot, hot and hot with Flying Dog Heat Series Ancho Lime Paradise Lager. This is a really interesting and complex beer. It’s not crazy hot, but it is as Flying Dog says, “significant heat.” Ancho Lime Paradise Lager uses Ancho peppers, lime juice, Saaz hops and grains of paradise and the resulting combination really does balance out well. You can’t miss the heat in this beer, but it doesn’t overpower the rest of the flavors on board. Ancho Lime Paradise Lager will hit 6%-AbV and 25 IBU and if you’re a heat lover, this beer will not disappoint.
Be sure to get your hands on both of these beers and see if you like them as much as we did….and as always, when you do try them, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
