From Anchor:
San Francisco, CA (March 8, 2016) – Today, Anchor Brewing Company announces the return of Flying Cloud San Francisco Stout™, a dark Dublin-style brew that marked the first release in their Anchor Argonaut Collection™.
Back by popular demand yet again, Flying Cloud San Francisco Stout (7.4% ABV) is inspired by the export stouts savored in San Francisco during the Gold Rush, which were no ordinary ales. They were export stouts—dark, intense, high-gravity brews created to survive the long voyage around Cape Horn. Flying Cloud is made with English Maris Otter pale malt, two black malts, and flaked barley. Nugget and Golding hops provide a spicy, floral aroma with a deep, dark-chocolaty maltiness and dry finish.
“Flying Cloud has always been a favorite beer among the brewers at Anchor. We’re thrilled that Anchor fans have responded the same way so we’re excited to re-release Flying Cloud yet again,” said Anchor Brewmaster Scott Ungermann. “One sip of Flying Cloud is like taking a step back in time to the Gold Rush when many miners were enjoying similar Dublin-style beers exported to San Francisco. The flaked barley and Maris Otter malt create a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel that compliments the brew’s roasted, slightly sweet flavor. The lingering spicy hop flavors and dry finish balance the beer nicely.”
Flying Cloud San Francisco Stout is inspired by the iconic ship of the same name. The average clipper took 125 days to sail from New York to San Francisco. But not Flying Cloud, which, in 1851, made the trip in 89 days, 21 hours anchor to anchor. No other ship sailed it faster until 1989. With its “extreme” design, its captain Josiah Creesy, and his wife/navigator Eleanor, the Flying Cloud is the ideal symbol for this distinctively delicious brew.
Anchor Flying Cloud San Francisco Stout will be available nationwide through May in 4-packs and on draught at select bars, restaurants, and stores, and at the Anchor Brewing Taproom and the Anchor Brewing Beer Garden at The Yard in San Francisco. About Anchor Brewing Company
Anchor Brewing Company’s roots date back to the California Gold Rush making it one of America’s oldest breweries. Its Anchor Steam® Beer is San Francisco’s original since 1896. In 1965, Fritz Maytag acquired and revived the struggling brewery at a time when mass production of beer dominated and seemed unstoppable. Maytag started a revolution in beer that originated today’s craft beer movement. An undisputed icon, Anchor is America’s first craft brewery where beers are handmade in our traditional copper brewhouse from an all-malt mash. At Anchor, we practice the time-honored art of classical brewing, employing state-of-the-art methods to ensure that our beers are always pure and fresh. We know of no brewery in the world that matches our efforts to combine traditional, natural brewing with such carefully applied, modern methods of sanitation, finishing, packaging and transporting.
