Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose 2015 - A First Sampling

imageWe brought you the news that Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose would be returning for 2015, so a BIG thank you to Anderson Valley Brewing for sending me an early 12oz can sample.

This beer is a seasonal release that will run from Oct through March 2016 with draft and cans heading out in mid-Sept and 12oz bottles to follow.

If you’re unfamiliar, this beer starts out with The Kimmie, The Yink & The Holy Gose recipe but then the brewers at Anderson Valley add “copious amounts of blood orange puree during fermentation.”  This beer seems to be the result of some Mimosa-like experimentation at the brewery with orange juice being added to gose to form what they are calling a “MiGose.”  In the end, blood oranges really stood out, leading to this beer.

If you haven’t tried this beer  (or any of the Anderson Valley Gose varieties) you’re missing out.  This beer is based on a historical recipe that calls for sea salt and coriander, but Blood Orange Gose adds in some really nice citrusy and berry flavors.  This beer begins with a pleasant bright mouthfeel and flavors and I really like how the salty, tart and citrusy flavors play with each other at the end.  Blood Orange Gose finishes clean with just enough trailing sea salt brightness to make you want another sip, so plan to enjoy more than one.

This beer is part of the Highway 128 Session Series, and as such it comes in at a sessionable (and very drinkable) 4.2%-AbV.  Be sure to get your hands on Some Anderson Valley Brewing Blood Orange Gose or even The Kimmie The Yink & The Holy Gose…try them for yourself and let me know what YOU think.
