On Wednesday, July 15, Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project will release its newest specialty one-off beer, Key Lime Tau (2π), at its taproom (3350 Brighton Blvd) at 6:00 p.m. MST.

Key Lime Tau (2π) was brewed in collaboration with Hawkshead Brewery (UK) as part of the Trans-Atlantic Rainbow Project, a series that challenges brewers to come together and brew a beer inspired by a color. In its third year, the 2015 project involved seven UK breweries, each paired with a different American brewery and randomly assigned a color.

“It was great to be able to brew with Hawkshead while we were in Europe this spring,” said Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner/Head Brewer. “The Rainbow Project is a unique way of bringing brewers together and it’s always fun to brew overseas. Plus, we’re no strangers to brewing the rainbow so it was easy to say ‘Yes, let’s brew green!’”

Crooked Stave released Wild Wild Brett Green (WWBG) in 2011 as part of its own Rainbow Series, which concluded with the release of Wild Wild Brett Violet (WWBV) in May 2013. Key Lime Tau (7.0% ABV), brewed to embody the color green, is a Mixed Culture Fermentation Ale aged in Oak with Lactose, Fresh Lime Peel and Fresh Lemongrass.

“Key Lime Tau is a riff on a friend of ours’ beer Limoncello. We decided to put our own spin on a Limoncello and it came out very much like a Key Lime Pie,” said Yakobson. “We chose to call this beer Key Lime Tau as ‘tau’ is mathematically 2π and since the collaboration was brewed at both Hawkshead and Crooked Stave, two versions exist making it two Pies.”
