From Yards:
PHILADELPHIA (April 8, 2015) – Yards Brewing Co. is going green for the month of April with two annual initiatives that support the Greater Philadelphia Region’s eco-system. Yards values sustainability in its brewing practices and community partnerships with two upcoming events: the 2nd Annual Arbrew Day and the 3rd Annual Bee-Garden Initiative.
On April 24, 2015, Arbor Day, from 4-7pm at various locations, Yards, Fairmount Park Conservancy and Tree Philly present the 2nd Annual Arbrew Day. Yards and Tree Philly will be giving away 100 yard trees at 10 locations throughout the city. Participating locations include Frankford Hall, Shake Shack, City Tap House University City, Goat’s Beard in Manayunk, and more. Every person 21 or older who adopts a tree on Arbrew Day receives a free Yards beer as well. Trees are first come, first serve. In 2014, Arbrew Day donated 50 yard trees to increase Philadelphia’s much-needed tree coverage; this year, the initiative has doubled its efforts. Photos from last year’s event can be found at #ArbrewDay.
For the entire month of April, Yards is giving away over 20,000 bee garden seed packets, containing flowers, native to the mid-Atlantic region, that attract and feed pollinators. More bees in the region means more flowers and a higher produce yield for local farmers. The seed packets are sourced and packaged by Bentley Seeds and contain purple coneflower and lance-leaved coreopsis. They will be distributed to the public through 200+ locations that sell Yards brews, as well as several green public spaces such as the Schuylkill Center and Tyler Arboretum. The goal of these seed packets is to educate consumers about the nation’s dwindling bee population and get 20,000 gardens planted to sustain them. The bee garden effort will continue throughout the summer, as Yards will host a series of Bee Garden Happy Hour Fundraisers beginning July 2015. The happy hours will be held at several locations throughout Philadelphia and its surrounding neighborhoods, once the bee gardens are in full bloom. As summer approaches, stay tuned for dates and locations for the Yards Bee Garden Happy Hours.
Yards is planting seeds and roots now in an effort to make Philadelphia greener throughout the year. Their eco-friendly initiatives go beyond the month of April and can be found in their company’s core values. Yards Brewing Company is proud to be the first 100% wind-powered brewery in Pennsylvania, and all of their cardboard is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Additionally, Yards supports local farms by reusing their spent grain for livestock feed and have adopted brewing practices to minimize waste and water usage.
