From Two Roads:
Our hometown of Stratford, CT is known for playing a large part in aviation history. Just a mile from where the brewery stands, the world’s first helicopter took off one historic day in 1939 piloted by its designer and legendary aviation pioneer, Igor Sikorsky. His company, Sikorsky Aircraft is still making helicopters in Stratford to this day.
When we opened in 2012, we knew we wanted to honor this visionary man so we created a very special commemorative beer and named it “Igor’s Dream”—a Russian Imperial Stout which is an appropriate style given his Russian heritage. And like Igor himself, who took the road less traveled when he invented the helicopter, we took the “Road Less Traveled” when making this beer. The recipe starts as a classic Russian Imperial Stout but veers off the beaten path by using a healthy dose of malted rye and then barrel-aging it in rye whiskey barrels. The beer will be released in 750 ml cork and cage bottles on Igor’s Day, available only at the brewery. 999 bottles will be sold at $20 per bottle.
This year, two more “copilots” will be joining the flight formation! We will be releasing Igor’s Dream aged in a Cognac barrel and Igor’s Dream aged in a Madeira barrel. Only 225 Madeira and 250 Cognac bottles have been made, making these the rarest Igor’s Dream releases yet. Bottles of these two limited release versions will be $25 per bottle.
Lastly, ’13 and ’14 vintage bottles of Igor’s Dream will be on sale in very limited quantities, also at $25 per bottle.
Buzz Truck will be parked outside from 7-11 a.m. for patrons to purchase coffee/breakfast, while food trucks Bodega Tacos and Firehouse Grill will be at the brewery to serve lunch and dinner.
Igor Day isn’t just about the beer though, it’s about celebrating Stratford’s role in aviation history. Igor Sikorsky’s sons, Igor Jr. and Nikolai, will be on hand from noon to 2:00 pm to autograph bottles and talk with customers. Brewmaster Phil Markowski will also be signing bottles.
On Igor’s Day, draft versions of all three 2015 Igor’s Dream variations (Rye Whisky, Madeira and Cognac) as well as vintage Igor’s Dream will be on tap in the brewery tasting room while supplies last. 10% of the bar sales will go to the CT Air and Space Museum based in Stratford.
Igor Day is one of Two Roads’ favorite days of the year. It’s a day to celebrate a great beer and a great man.
