Summit Releases The Villain & Unchained Series 16: Herkulean Woods

imageWe brought you news of Herkulean Woods,(and the Villain) and now the release details from Summit:

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (August 13, 2014) – Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of two new limited beers. The Villain is a special release, brewed exclusively for the Summit booth in the International Bazaar at the Minnesota State Fair. Herkulean Woods is part of the ongoing limited release, brewer-led Unchained Series. Herkulean Woods releases the week of August 18 and The Villain will start pouring on opening day of the fair, August 21.

The Villain is the second beer that Summit has brewed exclusively for the Minnesota State Fair. Last year brewer Jeff Williamson debuted his State Fair IPA. This year brewer Gabe Smoley has created a black lager hybrid and his limited brew will be tapped on Day 1 of the Fair at the Summit booth in the International Bazaar. Brewer Gabe will be on hand starting at 11am the first day to kick off the exclusive beer.

“The Villain is a traditional German style lager, only more sinister. Jet black in color but smooth in flavor, this lager is enhanced with unique malts to give it a midnight color but still maintains the crisp, clean flavors of a traditional lager. It is subtle and smooth with no bitterness or astringency. This beer is both delicate and flavorful, sweet but finishes dry, with mild roasted malty flavors,” said Gabe Smoley, Brewer.

Herkulean Woods is the first Unchained beer from new brewer Christian Dixon. Christian has been with the brewery since 2009, but was recently promoted to the brewing team after completing the Siebel Institute Associate in Brewing program. In his first effort, Christian has brought us a beer that would make Paul Bunyan proud, inspired by the natural beauty and ingredients of the upper Midwest.

“Herkulean Woods is going to be a unique beer, with a very bold flavor profile that will reflect both beer throughout history and the history of the land around us,” said Dixon. “California Lager yeast from the frontier days, Wild Country Maple Syrup from Lutsen, MN, Lacey malt developed, grown and malted here in Minnesota, spruce tips grown at Quilted Gardens Christmas Tree Farm in northern Iowa, and of course, St. Paul water! This beer will live large in both malt body and hop character, with solid pine, earthy, and spicy notes, as well as aromatics from the maple syrup and the spruce tips.”
