From Schell’s:
New Ulm, MN (Jan 2014) - The August Schell Brewing Co., the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the country, brewer of Schell’s and Grain Belt, are releasing two long-awaited seasonal beers this January, Schell’s Bock and Schmaltz’s Alt.
As winter tightens its grip on the Midwest, a hearty beer is required to keep even the toughest beer drinker warm.Schell’s Bock is brewed with a harmonious blend of 10 different malts and noble hops, giving it a rich flavor and robust malt character. Schell’s Bock Fest is usually the first thing that comes to mind when Schell’s Bock is brought up. Every year over 5,000 festers make the annual pilgrimage to the Schell’s Brewery for a day outdoors filled with music, dancing and great Schell’s beer. This Bock Fest falls on March 1st.
The second release is Schmaltz’s Alt. This Doppel Alt is the only Schell’s beer named after a former president. Warren “Schmaltz” Marti was a fourth generation Schell and president of the brewery from 1965 to 1986. One of Warren’s favorite pastimes in the 30’s was a date with his future wife Casey to the city dump to shoot rats. The manager of the city dump was John Schmaltz- hence the nickname “Schmaltz” Marti. This beer has a rich, sweet malty flavor with hints of licorice, balanced by a chocolatey bitterness. Only 200 barrels of this winter favorite were brewed this year, making it a beer worth looking for!
