Alaskan Barley Wine debuted as a limited edition vintage in 2003, and has been a cold weather mainstay ever since. The first barley wines were originally brewed in England during the 19th century, named for their higher alcohol content which were comparable to wines of the era, and the style was destined to warm Alaskans on bitter-cold winter nights. This Pilot Series beer is a full bodied ale, deep mahogany in color and brewed with an array of complementing malts to achieve its high original gravity. Multiple fresh hop additions in the boil and dry hopping during fermentation provide contrast to the big malt character, resulting in the smooth balance that distinguishes this specialty brew. Like many fine wines, Alaskan Barley Wine may be aged in the bottle and gains deeper malt complexity and smoothness over time. Look for Alaskan Barley Wine starting on December 1st.
