Coronado, CA, October 14, 2013/mbb/Coronado, also known as America’s “Crown City” has added a little more heavy metal to its crown as brewers from Coronado Brewing Company have brought home a silver medal from this past weekend’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO. Coronado Brewing’s Black Sails won a silver medal out of 73 entries in the American-Style Black Ale category, and has an ABV of 6% and 75 IBU’s.

Black Sails is one of 13 beers served on draught at Coronado’s brewery and restaurant, alongside staples such as Islander IPA, Mermaid’s Red Ale and Orange Avenue Wit. Black Sails is also regularly on tap at the company’s San Diego tasting room, newly established this past winter.

“What a weekend it was in Denver!” Co-founder and company president Rick Chapman said. “Black Sails is one of my personal favorites and I’m honored it’s been chosen by GABF’s panel of judges as a standout among the great craft beers in the US.”

The highly coveted award marks the first time the hometown favorite brewer has medaled in this elite brewing competition. The Great American Beer Festival is presented by the Brewers Association and awarded 252 medals to some of the best commercial breweries nationwide this year. Now in its 27th year, the 2013 competition surpassed all previous participation records. Its panel of judges was comprised of 201 beer experts from 11 countries evaluating 4,809 entries, making competition especially stiff.
