From Bagby Beer:
The big question remains: where are we with everything? The most exciting thing to happen in a while is that we have construction fencing installed - this is big news around here as it's the most evident sign that we are on the cusp of starting the build out. And, while a little fencing might not be that exciting to some, we have never been more thrilled to see it. It's all about perspective - you never can tell what will get you fired up. For us, this week, it's a bunch of chain link!
While we are sure no one is more anxious than us to get going on the build-out phase, we have more respect than ever for anyone who has ever designed and built a restaurant (let alone a restaurant with a brewery! And a garden! And a 2nd floor! And out of a former car dealership!)...here are a few high-level updates:
Building Permits - Done! (needed that complete so we could begin the demolition and construction phase)
Construction - General Contractor was selected a few months ago: Mike Wheelihan of Wheelihan Construction. Great local guy and well-established company in San Diego. Construction is almost certainly going to take about 6 months, which, if all goes well, has us opening sometime in late 1st quarter 2014.
Demolition - Even though there hasn't been a ton to see on the outside of the buildings, the inside is nearly unrecognizable from just a couple of months ago. Essentially gutted, the flooring, ceilings, drywall, electrical, and plumbing have all been stripped from the buildings (even one small out-building was entirely removed). Additionally, the majority of the concrete has been removed from what was the dealership's service garage, to make way for new (thicker and sloped) concrete for the brewery. We estimate more than 10 large (40 cubic yards each!) dumpsters have been filled throughout the process. We've been super lucky to have a team of burly and dedicated volunteers to help. What a difference - this will make the 'professional' demolition much faster and easier.
We are off to the GABF in a couple of weeks in Denver. As always it will be great to catch up with our brewer friends from all over the country, to collaborate, and to find new inspiration - as we always do on these trips. While it will certainly be strange to be on the floor without beer again this year, we know we are taking all the time that is needed to do this our way - and we remain committed to our vision of Bagby Beer. As far as we are concerned, there is no rush to right.
Lastly, we have been hearing from some of our neighbors lately - how nice to know we are anticipated right here in our own neighborhood - so here's a shout out to you, Oceanside locals! Also, in case you missed it, Brandon Hernández wrote another nice piece on Bagby Beer in the SD Reader a couple of weeks ago - some nice pictures, too (check it out here if you have a minute).
Still plenty of good stuff going on and we can't thank you enough for your continued interest and support.
All the best -
The Bagbys
